1.5 Stabiliser panels

1.5.1 Vertical stabiliser
The vertical stabiliser is assembled from two ABS shells. The first step is to glue the plywood
reinforcement in the left-hand shell using Stabilit express, together with the tailskid, which
should be bent to the shape shown in the drawing from 2 mm Ø pianowire.
The next step is to glue the two shells together; be sure to apply plenty of Stabilit express to the
plywood reinforcement so that any gap is filled; if you neglect to do this the panel will be
distorted when the stabiliser retaining screws are tightened through the reinforcement. Allow the
glue to set hard, then drill the two holes for the retaining screws and fix the vertical stabiliser to
the tail boom using 2.9 x 13 mm self-tapping screws.

1.5.2 Horizontal stabiliser

The horizontal stabiliser is assembled as shown in the drawing: each panel consists of a profiled
bottom shell and a flat top cover.
Cut a recess in the bottom shells at the fuselage end to accept the 4 mm Ø carbon fibre
connecting rod, as shown in the drawing. Drill 3 mm Ø holes for the beech dowels which serve
as incidence pegs.
The bottom shells and covers can now be glued together and the joint lines cleaned up. Glue
the beech dowels in place at the same time, but not the carbon fibre rod.
If you work carefully, the surfaces of the stabiliser panels can be left unpainted and simply
cleaned up using polishing paste; otherwise apply filler paste, rub down when hard, and paint
the panels.
