before the one (e.g. No. 10) you are current-
ly hearing, you must indicate "CP 4", as the
tape must be rewound four intervals before
the desired selection can be played (e.g. No.
7). To hear the third selection (e.g. No. 7)
before the interval (e.g. No. 10 & No. 9)
where the tape is currently positioned, you
must indicate "CP 3".
Notes:
1, Recordings that are specially noisy (due
to old, scratchy records, poor FM or AM
reception,
or whatever)
may
produce
signals (noise) in the intervals between
selections. On the other hand, particular-
ly low-level recordings may be detected
as an interval.
These may prevent the
CPS function from distinguish between
different selection.
In the previous case,
it is recommended that the REC MUTE
facility be used to record more than
4 seconds of silence between the selec-
tions to ensure proper CPS functioning,
particularly when you make a recording
with the dbx NR system.
2. If, when making your own recordings,
you would like to use the CPS function
for playback, be sure to record at least 4
seconds of silence between each selec-
tion.
The CPS function will not work
properly
on
pre-recorded
tapes
that
deviate from this format.
3. CPS can be set in the record mode/
record-pause mode as well.
CDS (Computomatic Direct Selection)
(Refer to Fig. 5 on page 64)
CDS system allows direct access to any one
of tunes recorded by presetting the tune
number counted from the beginning of each
type side A or B. The tune number can be
preset by pushing ( ¢4or >) button first
and then CPS button.
"PL 1" will appear on the Multi Display as
the CPS
button
is pushed first, the PL
number will increase by one each time the
CPS button is pushed repeatedly. Thus "PL
5" will appear
if the button
is pushed
5 times.
In the CDS system, as the CDS
searching is always started at beginning of
SIDE A or SIDE B, first you must know the
side on which the tune to be searched has
been recorded.
For example, if you wish to search the 3rd
tune on SIDE A, first push the forward play
( > ) button to designate the side A, and
push the rewind button (4) to rewind the
tape at its beginning, then the CPS button 3
times to set the counter to "PL 3". In the
same way if you wish to search the 7th tune
on SIDE
B (e.g. No. 22), first push the
reverse play button ( < ), and push the
rewind (reverse) button ( >» ) and CPS
button 7 times to set the counter to "PL 7".
To exit the CDS mode, 1) push COUNTER
CLEAR or MODE switch during the tape is
being rewound.
2) Push ( <4 or >> ) button if the tape is
being forwarded for searching.
Notes:
1. There
exit other operating procedures
for the CDS, but they may depend upon
the
AUTO
REVERSE
switch
and
become
more
complicated.
However,
when you set the PL number higher than
the numbers of tunes recorded incorrect-
ly, the searching result will depend upon
the position of the AUTO
REVERSE
switch being set at that time.
2. When the tape has been already rewound
at its beginning, use CPS function to
select a desired tune instead of the CDS
function.
REC MUTE Function
The capability of creating blank unrecorded
portions (erased) on a tape during recording
is a real advantage
in many
recording
situations.
For instance, you may want to
eliminate
undesired
portions
of an
FM
broadcast that you are recording, such as
commercials,
station breaks, or announce-
ments.
You may want to record a complete
program
with controlled
spacing between
songs that can be filled in later with your
own choice of material. You may just want
a short period of silence between each song.
These blank spaces on the tape can be easily
Created
using the REC
MUTE
function.
During recording, when you want the erased
portion to begin, just press the REC MUTE
button.
The tape movement continues and
the tape is erased for 4 seconds.
The deck
then switches to the record-pause
mode.
When you want to begin recording the next
selection just press the PAUSE button and
normal recording will resume.
Dubbing
Deck-to-deck
copying
of tapes (dubbing)
can
be done without
using an external
amplifier.
Operation is the same as standard
record and playback procedures described in
the record and playback sections.
This deck
can be used as the "master''
recorder with a second recorder used as the
"slave'' recorder.
Connect the output of the
R-999X to the input of the slave recorder.
To use the R-999X and the second recorder
in opposite roles, simply reverse the input
and output connections.
Erasing
A previously
recorded
tape will be auto-
matically
erased
when
you
make
a new
recording on it.
Alternatively
it can be
erased by "recording" on it with the RE-
CORD level controls set to "0".

dbx Disc Recording
A) To record a dbx encoded signal from a
dbx
encoded
disc, set the dbx
DISC
button to the OUT (+1) position and
press the NR OUT button.
Now, the
encoded
signal from
the disc will be
recorded.
In this case,
playback
is
performed
with
the NR
dbx
button
depressed and the dbx DISC button set
to the OUT position.
To record a dbx decoded signal from a
dbx
encoded
disc, set the dbx
DISC
button to the IN (-) position.
The
decoded
signal
(i.e, the sound
you
would normally hear) will be recorded.
Playback
of a tape recorded
in this
manner is performed with the dbx DISC
button set to the OUT (4) position and
the NR OUT button depressed.
To playback a dbx encoded disc, set the
dbx DISC button to IN ( — ) position
and the AUTO
MONITOR
selector to
SOURCE.

Calibration Procedures (Fig. 6)
Before attempting to make any calibration
adjustments, be sure to clean the heads, tape

the cassette holder door.

and the LEVEL L LED will light.
3. Adjust the LEVEL L calibration control
until a 0 dB reading on the meter is
obtained.
4. After the LEVEL L is adjusted properly,
press the TEST TONE button. The right
peak level meter will indicate the level
and the LEVEL R LED will light this
time.
5. Adjust the LEVEL
R until a 0 dB
reading is obtained.
6. Now press the TEST TONE button again,
