To perform correct, accurate measurements, the oscilloscope must temperature-
adjusted at least 30 minutes before use.
First make sure that you are familiar with the operations described in the "Initial Operation" chapter so
that the signal is correctly displayed on the screen.

Amplitude measurements

6.1.1

AC voltage measurements

1. Adjust the VOLTS/DIV control. [8] so that the signal to be measured is displayed over approximately
5 vertical divisions and make sure that the VOLT VAR. button [7] is up against the stop on the right
(calibrated position).
2. Adjust the time base using TIME/DIV. [13] so that there are 1 to 2 signal periods on the screen.
3. Displace the signal vertically with POSITION [6] to align the bottom exactly on one of the lower lines
of the graticule as shown in figure 4, point A.
4. Modify the horizontal position using POSITION [12] so that the vertical central axis of the graticule
intersects the signal exactly at its peak (see figure 4, point B).
5. Count the number of divisions on the vertical axis between points A & B.
6. Use the following formula to determine the peak-to-peak amplitude of the signal:
Vcc = Number of divisions on vertical axis x Sensitivity read on [8] x Probe factor
7. For example, in figure 4 where we are using a 1:10 attenuating probe:
8. If the wave form is pure, simply use the theoretical coefficients to deduce the rms value; in this
example, for a pure sine wave (eff=rms):
See illustration on next page.
