Functional test of directional valves under water
To check the proper function of the directional valves in
the mouthpiece, press both breathing hoses together
with your hand. As you exhale, air must flow through the
exhalation hose, but not through the inhalation hose.
Repeat this procedure during inhalation. When inhaling,
gas will flow through the inhalation hose, but not through
the exhalation hose.
Warning!
If you suspect that the directional valves are
defective of improperly installed, immediately
switch to your bailout system and terminate the dive.
Failure to dosocould lead to serious injury or death.
It is important that you never allow water to get into the
rebreather system. The easiest way for water to enter the
DrägerRay is by taking the mouthpiece out of your mouth
without first shutting the closure valve. That is why you
must never take the mouthpiece out of your mouth
without first closing the mouthpiece valve. You can tell
whether water has gotten into the rebreather system if
any of the following occurs:
Breathing resistance increases
You notice noise from bubbling during breathing
The relief valve blows off during every breathing cycle
The DrägerRay unit becomes noticeably more
negatively buoyant.
Warning!
Should you suspect that water has gotten into the
rebreather system, IMMEDIATELY switch to your
open circuit bailout system and ter-minate the dive.
Failure to do so could lead to serious injury or death.
Outside of reducing the effectiveness of the DiveSorb
CO
-scrubber-cartridge, water in the system will
2
produce a caustic solution. This caustic solution could
damage your respiratory tract, mouth and pharynx
cavity. Should you feel a burning or wet, slippery sen-
sation in your mouth or pharynx, immediately switch to
your open circuit bailout, terminate the dive, and upon
surfacing rinse out your mouth with fresh water. Should
any symptoms persist, contact a qualified physician
immediately. If water has entered the system the
negative buoyancy will increase. Compensate this by
venting the buoyancy chamber.
In case you want to test the function of the dosage fitting
while diving, close the mixed gas cylinder and keep
watching the gauge. The pressure is supposed to
continuously decrease. As soon as it reaches 40 bar
(580 psi), immediately reopen the valve entirely. Note that
this is not a precision- test!
Warning!
During this test it is important to always keep the
gauge in your hand, and immediately reopen the
valve entirely. Failure to do so will almost certainly lead
to unconsciousness and drowning as the gas mixture
becomes increasingly low in oxygen.
