Intended use
Warning!
YOU MUST have a thorough understanding of
the dangers of hypoxia and oxygen toxicity (hyper-
oxia) before using the DrägerRay or any other
rebreather. DO NOT attempt to use the DrägerRay if
you do not have a thorough understanding of these two
maladies and how they may be avoided while using
your DrägerRay.
One of the things you no doubt learned in your
DrägerRay Rebreather course is that unlike open circuit
scuba, you may breathe off the DrägerRay even with the
scuba cylinder turned off. This is because your exhaled
breath will be recirculated through the rebreather system.
While you might be able to breathe for a few breaths with
the nitrox cylinder turned off, you will very quickly deplete
the usable oxygen in that breath and will go unconscious
unless the tank is quickly turned on.
For this reason, you must be exceptionally careful not to
attempt to dive the DrägerRay Rebreather with the tank
valve in an off position, as you will not have the usual
warning signs you might expect with open circuit scuba -
namely, the inability to breathe!
With DrägerRay you can dive from the surface.
Danger!
NEVER dive the DrägerRay without the tank valve
turned on or when the supply cylinder is empty.
Failure to do so will lead to serious injury or death.
Maximum Depth
As with any nitrox system, the DrägerRay is depth-limited
by the oxygen content of the nitrox mixture used. As you
learned in your nitrox course, if you go deeper than
recommended for the oxygen percentage used, you may
very well experience symptoms of oxygen toxicity, which
include convulsions and unconsciousness. This can
obviously lead to drowning and death while underwater,
which is why these maximum depths are so important to
follow.
For physiological reasons Dräger Sicherheitstechnik
GmbH recommends not to exceed the following diving
depths:
Mix
50 Vol.% O
/ 50 Vol.% N
2
The depth described above provides for a maximum
oxygen partial pressure of 1.6 ATA.
Warning!
The DrägerRay must only be used with nitrox
mixtures of 50 % O
the DrägerRay could lead to hypoxia, oxygen toxicity,
drowning or decompression sickness, any of which
may cause serious injury or death.
