Don diving gear. The unit is carried on the back. Right
before you enter the water, turn the nitrox cylinder open
and place the mouthpiece in your mouth, making sure the
on/off valve is open. Do not open the nitrox cylinder valve
until you are ready to begin diving as gas will continu-
ously flow into the breathing circuit, whether or not you
are breathing. Remember, also, to turn the cylinder off
immediately upon leaving the water, as the cylinder will
empty itself otherwise.
Danger !
Make certain that the mixed gas cylinder valve is
turned on shortly before you enter the water.
Failure to do so will almost certainly lead to uncon-
sciousness and drowning as the gas mixture becomes
increasingly low in oxygen.
To make sure that the cylinder valve is open, look at the
gauge. If open, a constant pressure value is displayed.
After shutting of the cylinder valve, you will note that the
pressure gauge needle will slowly go down until it
reaches zero as the breathing gas is lost through the flow
meter. After opening the cylinder, close it and watch the
needle swing to zero. After the needle reaches zero,
open the cylinder valve fully once more, which should
take about two turns. Then, take the mouthpiece valve
into your mouth and blow out any water and push the
valve lever to the open position (Figure 6.19).
Please pay attention to the fact that the valve must be
opend and closed fully. Intermediate positions may allow
water to enter the loop.
Whenever you start breathing from the rebreather and
have breathed ambient air before the rebreather circle
and your own airways have to be purged with fresh mixed
gas. This purging procedure is necessary to remove the
ambient air with its low oxygen content from the re-
breather and your airways. For purging close the Nitrox
cylinder and inhale from the rebreather via the nose until
you are no longer able to inhale gas from the unit. Now
open the Nitrox cylinder and inhale from the device three
times and exhale via the nose.
This purging procedure is also necessary after you have
talked to your dive buddy after a short interruption of the
dive, since your airways have filled with ambient air while
speaking.
The relief valve in the exhalation bag should be set as
follows: First set it to maximum opening pressure by
turning the valve cap clockwise until it stops. From this
position, turn the valve cap by 6 to 11 turns anti-clock-
wise. You should find out your best setting during dives
in a swimming pool.
