6.2 Preparing for socket fabrication
6.2.1 Determining residual limb circumferences, residual limb length, flexion contracture
Determining the residual limb circumference
Complete the following steps to determine the circumference of the residual limb:
1) Have the patient sit on a chair.
2) Measure the proximal residual limb circumference as the top circular circumference (see
fig. 1).
3) Measure the distal residual limb (see fig. 2).
INFORMATION: The measurement is taken at the transition from the hemispherical
residual limb end to the conical section of the residual limb.
INFORMATION: If there is flaccid soft tissue at the end of the residual limb, the resid­
ual limb end has to be formed into a hemisphere while measuring.
