• A djust the timer to the ablation time specified by the physician using the
timer buttons.
• E nsure that the active and dispersive electrodes are properly deployed and
attached both to the patient and the RF generator (see "Connection of Return
Pads" and "Connection of Active Electrode").
PeRFoRminG aBlation
Ablation is initiated by pressing the START button, which causes the TIME window
to display "00:00" and start incrementing. The POWER and IMPEDANCE windows
are blank until the power is set to at least 2W. After pressing the START button,
power should immediately be adjusted by the physician / user to the lowest value
that delivers the power required for tissue effect within the desired ablation time.
If error code E01, E02, or E03 is displayed, check the connections between the
generator and electrode and return pads.
If error code P-1, P-2, P-3, or P-4 is displayed, excessive RF current is flowing
through the return pad indicated. Pads are identified next to the receptacle into
which they are connected. Ensure that the pads are placed according to Figure 3
and not according to Figure 4.
CAUTION! The power applied to any electrode should be kept to the minimum
necessary to achieve the desired surgical effect.
As RF ablation heats the tissue, impedance increases, resulting in more elements
of the impedance display being lit. The "RF On" tone frequency increases as more
elements are lit. When all ten elements are lit, impedance has roughly doubled. After
this, impedance generally increases to a much higher value, and power decreases
to less than 15W. When this happens the RF power should be turned off.
PaSSive PoweR limitation
The RF 3000™ Generator is an adjustable, constant-voltage RF power supply.
Delivering RF energy into target tissues at the desired rate produces heat,
coagulation, and corresponding desiccation. This causes tissue impedance to rise.
At a constant voltage, power is inversely proportional to the load or tissue impedance.
For example, if impedance doubles, power decreases by 50%. RF power is therefore
inherently limited by the response of the tissue which tends to protect the tissue
from damage due to over-ablation.

PoweR-on SelF-teSt
Every time the RF 3000 Generator mains power switch is turned on, a Power-
On Self-Test is performed by the internal microprocessor that checks numerous
systems and functions, including:
• the function of all displays and the "RF On" tone;
• the accuracy of power, voltage, and current measurements;
• the Reference Voltage accuracy;
• the Return Pad current-measurement accuracy;
• the A/D calibration accuracy;
• RAM functionality;
• firmware cyclical redundancy check on the software.
If any of these tests fail, then an error code is displayed and the radiofrequency generator
(RFG) will not deliver energy. Sometimes, cycling mains power will clear the error,
but if this does not work, then the RFG must be returned to Boston Scientific.
