Changing and Cleaning the Pump Head

You may carry out maintenance and cleaning procedures only on the
pump head and on the optionally integrated dynamic mixing chamber.
Both pump heads (10 ml and 50 ml) are identical and differ only in their
size, therefore the descriptions below are valid for both sizes of pump
heads with stainless steel, titanium, or ceramic inlays.
The pump heads from the WellChrom series can not be used for the
Smartline pumps because the drive mechanism is different for each.
Removing the Pump Head
This SOP refers to the Smartline Pump 1000.
The pump head can be easily removed and exchanged or be
disassembled in order to clean the valves or replace piston seals, piston
rods, etc.
1. Purge the pump head with a suitable cleaning agent and then with
distilled water. You can use SOP 11 "Purging the Smartline Pump
1000" on page 20.
Danger of skin irritation may exist if organic solvents remain in the
pump head.
2. Remove the solvent tubings from the "Pump head inlets", item {3.3}
in Fig. 4 on page 8.
3. Loosen the "eluent outlet to transducer" (item {3.5}) and the "inlet
to transducer" (item {4.1}).
4. Remove the "connection capillary", item {3.22} in Fig. 30 on page
39.
5. Loosen the "Pump head inlet" (item {3.5}) as well as the fittings on
the "outlet valve housing" (item {3.6}).
6. Using a hexagonal spanner no. 4 (4 mm), loosen just two
diagonally opposed "head set screws" (item {3.2}). Remove the two
screws (see Fig. 30).
7. Carefully loosen the two remaining screws, alternating from one to
the other, approx. half of one turn. This prevents the pump head
from tilting and becoming damaged. Once the spring tension has
been reduced, hold the pump head firmly in one hand while
removing the screws completely with the other hand.
8. Carefully remove the pump head.
Removing and Checking Piston Rods
This SOP refers to the 10 ml as well as to the 50 ml pump heads.
1. Remove the pump head as described in SOP "Removing the Pump
Head".
If you only wish to check the piston rods, you do not need to disassemble
the pump head any further.
