3.5.7.7 RDS/ARI (Option)
General Remarks
The RDSlARI signal, Radio Data System and/or 'Autofahrer Rundfunk Information' , are
transmitted at the same time as the normal FM radio program without interfering in it. The
RDS information consists of various codes which, after decoding, give additional informa-
tion, for example, identification of the radio station, frequencies of alternative transmitters,
traffic information, radio text, time and date. The data are sent in digital form.
The ARI signal has less scope and transmits information, for example
Transmitter Identification (SK)
Area Identification (BK)
Announcement Identification (DK)
ARI information is sent in analog form.
The RDS/ARI signal of this generator adds test facilities, providing convenient and fully inte-
grated test functionality for car radios, decoders and multiplex broadcast receivers for RDS/
ARI.
The RDS/ARI module operates in accordance with the EBU (European Broadcast Union) .
Because of different systems two ARI versions, ARI-Germany or ARI-USA, are offered. The
ARI system is switched over by the SPECIAL function.
Setting using the keys
The RDS and ARI signal can each operate individually as a modulation mode or as a combined
RDS/ARI signal or in addition can be combined with FM, FM-Stereo or AM. Combined modula-
tion modes are described in 3.5.7.8.
When RDS has been selected with ENTER, a switchover can be made to ARI and RDS+ARI by
means of the MODULATION t ►keys. If the SPECIAL key is pressed instead of ENTER,
additional modulations can be activated.
In the RDS mode, 20 data records are available, with memory locations 1 - 10 containing
predefined RDS data and memory locations 1 1 - 20 programmable RDS data. The RDS data of
memory locations 1 - 10 are listed in the table which follows.
The RDS data records are called up by means of the MOD PARAMETER keys when RDS modu-
lation is activated. The activated data record appears below the text R~D~S . When reselected,
an 'underline' appears here. The memory location (1 - 20) is entered by the numerical keys
and can then be changed by the '+O' '-O' step keys.
RDS memory locations 11 - 20 can be created according to customer requirements and are
loaded by an IBM-compatible PC. Software support and the 'RDS MessageWriter" manual
containing detailed information are available for this purpose.
To do this, the PM 5330 generator must be equipped with a RS-232 or an IEEE-488 interface.
