Almost all modern brakes provide con-
siderably more braking power than was
available for bicycles in the past. Care-
fully familiarise yourself with the brakes,
practising using them and practise
emergency braking, starting on safe
ground with no traffic before setting out
into the traffic. Look ahead while riding.
Only use original spare parts. Otherwise
it is possible that the functionality of your
FLYER e-bike may be impacted or dam-
aged.
Adjust the brake lever to ensure that it
does not touch the handlebars when
pulled hard.
Back pedal brakes
If your FLYER
is equipped with back pedal
brakes, brake by pushing the pedals backwards
instead of forwards. This means that your bicycle
will not freewheel and you are unable to rotate the
pedals backwards freely as you otherwise can.
Back pedal brakes work best when both
cranks are in a horizontal position. If one
crank is pointing up and the other one
down, less force can be applied and
braking is less effective.
The effectiveness of back pedal brakes
can deteriorate substantially on long in-
clines. This type of braking system can
become very hot from continuous brak-
ing. You should also use the rim brakes
to slow down on long inclines. Wait until
the back pedal brake has cooled down
and do not touch the brake drum.
Ensure that the brake anchor plate is
correctly attached with the appropriate
screw when removing or installing it.
Rim brakes (V Brakes)
The braking action for modern rim
brakes is very sensitive. You will have to
get used to the braking action for V
Brakes Activate the brake carefully. You
are recommended to practice using the
emergency brakes. By doing this, you
will be prepared to safely stop your
e-bike when needing to brake sharply.
When removing the front and rear wheel,
make sure the pull cable is loosened.
Using additional spring elements inappropriately
in the braking system (power moderators) may
lead to severe falls.
Adjusting the brakes
Your retailer will properly adjust your FLYER be-
fore giving it to you. There should be a gap of cir-
ca 1-1.5 mm between the brake pad and the rim.
Due to the wear done on the braking pad over
time, the gap between the rim and the brake can
grow larger, requiring more pressure when us-
ing the brake. For this reason, you are strongly
recommended to check this gap periodically and
adjust the brakes whenever the lever requires
too much pressure or the brakes aren't working
properly.
You can check the amount of wear on the braking
pads by checking the indents on the brake pads.
If these indents are not visible anymore, bring
your FLYER to a retail store to replace the brake
pads.
To check if your brakes are functioning properly,
do as follows:
• While pushing your e-bike forward, press the
front and rear brake levers one by one as if you
were sharply braking while riding.
• The front wheel should break in a delayed
fashion, causing the back wheel to lift from the
ground.
• The back wheel's braking action should be so
powerful that it stops the motion of the bike.
Adjusting the brake pad's distance to the rim
To adjust the brake pad's distance to the rim,
screw the cable adjusting screw on the brake le-
ver. By turning the adjusting screw clockwise and
inwards, you will expand the distance between
the brake pad and the rim. By turning the adjust-
ing screw outwards and counter clockwise, you
will reduce the distance between the brake pad
and the rim. Between the brake pad and the rim
there should be a distance of 1mm.
