Subsequently go to work with hot
water mixed with a mild liquid soap
(i.e. no strong chemical agents such as
bleach, ammonia or soda) and a soft
cotton cloth.
Because bearing-mounted turning
points are water repellent but not
waterproof, it is wise to avoid using a
garden hose or high-pressure sprayer.
We recommend that you grease the
aluminium, chrome and steel compo-
nents on your bicycle with acid-free
vaseline or special grease to prevent
oxidation.

THE CHECKLIST

After a fall it is very important that your
bicycle is carefully examined for dam-
age and defects even if no damage is
immediately visible in the fi rst instance.
Damaged components must be re-
placed immediately. For safety reasons
have your bicycle thoroughly checked,
preferably by your Batavus dealer.
I M P O R T A N T
If your front fork, handlebars or stee-
ring pin is/are bent or damaged after
a fall or accident, these components
may not, under any circumstances, be
bent back into their original shape. This
may alter the structure of the material
such that a crack could arise. If possible,
therefore, consult your Batavus dealer
16
and have bent or damaged bicycle
components replaced.
Check the following regularly:
• Are the brakes working properly?
Are the brake blocks and bolts fi rmly
tightened? Are the cables intact?
Are the brake surfaces clean and free
from grease?
• Are the spokes correctly tensioned?
Have your spokes checked and, if
necessary, tightened by your Batavus
dealer on a regular basis.
• Are the saddle and handlebars higher
than the maximum safety height?
• Have all the nuts and bolts been
fi rmly tightened and are they still in
good shape (not damaged)?
• Is the running area of the tyres worn
and do the tyres have any weak spots
or lumps? Are the tyres hard enough?
See the information on the side of the
tyre for the correct pressure.
• Are the handlebars well secured? Is
there any play in the headset?
• Do the saddle pin clamp, handlebar
hinge clamp and the frame hinge
clamp close properly?
• Have the two quick release levers (on
the frame and the handlebar hinge
clamp) have been secured with the
extra safety locks?
• Are the grips damaged or are they
loose?
• Is the lighting working properly and
do the batteries in the backlight need
replacing?
• Is the dynamo fi rmly fi xed; does the
dynamo wheel slip on the tyre?
• Are the refl ecting strips on the sides
of the tyres clean and easily visible in
the dark?
• Are all the gears still working pro-
perly?
• Are the refl ectors on the pedals free
from dirt and are the pedals still rough
enough?
• Are the luggage carrier and the car-
rier straps still fi rmly attached to the
bicycle?
• Is the chain tension still correct?
• Have components been mounted
on the bicycle at a later stage or have
changes been made to the bicycle (e.g.
the brake system)? Always have any ad-
ditions or alterations checked by your
Batavus dealer.
