into position.
8. Make sure that both quick release
levers (on the frame and the handlebar

the extra safety locks! Your bicycle is
ready for use.
HOW DO THE QUICK RELEASE LEVERS
WORK?
Batavus folding bicycles usually have
4 quick release levers, that is, the han-
dlebar hinge clamp, the frame hinge
clamp, the steering pin clamp and the
saddle pin clamp (see illustration 1).
These quick release levers work very
easily if you use them correctly.
The handlebar hinge clamp and frame
hinge clamp have already been ad-
justed by your Batavus dealer with the
aid of a bolt with screw thread in the
mechanism. Please do not touch these
hinge clamp mechanisms yourself. Have
them checked by your Batavus dealer
from time to time.
The saddle pin clamp and steering pin
clamp work slightly differently. When
you tighten the lever, the handle turns
180º. It meets with resistance dur-
ing a third of this distance and not
during the remaining two thirds. This
resistance is adjustable. Your Batavus
dealer will be happy to show you how
it works. Before getting onto your
10
bicycle, make sure that the two quick
release levers (on the frame and the
handlebar hinge clamp) have been
secured with the extra safety locks!

BRAKE TYPES

Batavus folding bicycles are equipped
with V-brakes or a back-pedal brake.
They are of high quality and require
little maintenance. Braking depends
largely on familiarity with the brakes,
experience and "feel".
In wet weather your braking distance
is longer (brake blocks) and when mak-
ing long descents it is safer to brake in
short bursts to prevent overheating of
the brake blocks.
I M P O R T A N T
• Nuts and bolts must be fi rmly tigh-
tened.
• Cables may not be frayed or kinked.
• Brake surfaces must be clean and free
from grease.
• For safety reasons we advise you ne-
ver to brake only with the front brake
as the front wheel can easily block
resulting in a fall.
• If, after a time, you notice that the
brake power of the bicycle is decreasing,
the brake is probably worn or not pro-
perly adjusted. Do not simply carry on
cycling with the brakes in this condition.
It is time for action! We provide a few
instructions here for the experienced,
enthusiastic do-it-yourselfer, but this is a
routine job for your Batavus dealer.

RIM BRAKES (V-BRAKES)

The V-brake (28) is a popular brake for
various sorts of bicycles. It gives a good
brake action and is highly effi cient,
light and extremely user friendly.
The cantilevers are soldered onto the
frame; they enable the brake blocks to
tilt against the rim.
The V-brake uses longer brake arms
than the standard cantilever brake and,
as a result, gives more brake power.
The brake cable of the V-brake runs via
a special cable guide or tube.
