THE SADDLE AND SADDLE PIN

The saddle and handlebars form the
basis for the seating comfort of a
bicycle. When running in a new bicycle
it is very easy to alter your posture to
suit the bicycle. However, the bicycle
must be adjusted to suit you. There is
a simple rule for the correct height of
the saddle.
If you get onto the bicycle with bare
feet and place your heel on the pedal,
with the crank in line with the seat
tube, it must be possible to just stretch
your leg (1).
This gives you the best height (with
shoes on and supporting yourself on
the balls of your feet) for relaxed ped-
alling when cycling (2).
If the saddle is 'too high' you will shift
across it and your back will begin to
protest. If it is 'too low' the backs of
your knees will become irritated.

1. To adjust the height of the saddle,
the saddle pin clamp (A) must be loos-
ened slightly (3).
(1)
2. The maximum height marks with
warning text may never be visible after
the adjustment. This means that the
saddle pin is inserted far enough into
the seat tube (at least 7 cm).
3. By loosening the saddle bolt (A), you
can tilt the saddle and adjust it back-
wards and forwards (4).
4. After having adjusted everything,
tighten all the nuts, bolts and quick
release lever again (as indicated in the
table of tightening torques in the chap-
ter on Safety).
