types of headlights are used on the dif-
ferent models of folding bicycles.
A. The normal type of headlight (37),
which is fed current by a dynamo.
When the drive wheel revolves, a volt-
age is produced in the magnetic fi elds
which is fed to the light.
B. A headlight with automatic switch
which is used in combination with a
hub dynamo. This technology makes
use of a sensor and automatically
switches the headlight on when it
becomes dark and if the bicycle moves.
This light continues to shine for a while
when you stop cycling.

THE BACKLIGHT

Various types of backlights are used on
the different models of folding bicycles
too.
A. A backlight with automatic switch
and battery. This technology (which
works on batteries) makes use of a
sensor and automatically switches the
14
backlight on when it becomes dark
and if the bicycle moves. This light also
continues to shine for a while when
you stop cycling.
B. An independently-working backlight
(38). Equipped with a switch ('ON/OFF')
and works on batteries.

WHAT CAN YOU DO YOURSELF?

1. The drawing shows where the
dynamo should be, relative to the tyre
(39).
Ensure that the imaginary axis from
the dynamo also goes through the axis
of the wheel (the axle).
Furthermore, the grooves on the
dynamo wheel must make maximum
contact with the ridges on the tyre.
2. Examine the electrical wiring to
check that:
a. The wires are well fi xed to the light
source.
(38)
b. Bulbs and dynamo are not corroded.
Scrape clean the contact points with a
blade, if necessary.
c. The wiring is not damaged or
jammed between other components.
d. Risk of short circuit (worn protective
layer).
I M P O R T A N T
• If the batteries are empty, go along
to your Batavus dealer.
• Of course, you always check whether
the lights are working before you get
on your bicycle when it is dark.
• Never switch on your dynamo when
cycling!
• If the weather is wet check whether
the dynamo has enough grip on the
side of the tyre.

THE HUB DYNAMO

The hub dynamo is a dynamo which is
integrated in the front hub (40).
