6.4. Setting of the exhaust valve timing

Engine performance graph will differ with a closed (performance curve 1) or open (performance
curve 2) exhaust valve (See diagram 3 grey area). The best performance characteristic of the
engine will be achieved when the opening time of the exhaust valve is at the intersection of the two
performance graphs.

If the exhaust valve opens too late or to soon you will lose performance and acceleration potential.
(See diagram 3 grey areas).
The engine reaches maximum performance even with the exhaust valve wrongly adjusted, but you
loose performance and acceleration potential.

The opening of the exhaust valve is audible. The bigger exhaust timing results in a
higher sound pattern.
The exhaust valve should open for kart operation at the engine speed of 7500 r.p.m.
The correct setting of the opening time of the exhaust valve has to be determined at
kart operation.
In the basic setting, the adjustment screw (item 16) is turned in so far that it is flush
with the valve cover (item 15, fig. 22). This setting is in most cases the best.
