Location selection

Smoke alarm devices with radio
links should be installed in the middle of
the room on the ceiling as the minimum
equipment in all bedrooms, children's
rooms and lobbies that serve as emer-
gency escape routes (Illus. 4). Select the
highest possible point for assembly with
a minimum distance of 0.5m from the
surrounding walls, furniture and lamps.
The device must be installed horizon-
tally. The smoke alarm device with radio
link will be attached in the middle in
rooms and lobbies with width less than
1m. The distance of at least 0.5m from
the wall cannot be kept in such a case.
The distance between two smoke alarm
devices with radio links may be a maxi-
mum of 15m in lobbies with a width of
max. 3m. The distance of the first alarm
from the face (end of the lobby) may be
a maximum of 7.5m.
In lobbies with an area less than 6sqm,
the smoke alarm device with radio link
can be attached on the wall instead,
since otherwise it can lead to increased
number of spurious alarms. The same is
applicable for kitchens serving as exit
routes. Even if it is not possible to install
the alarm on the ceiling on account of
insufficient adherence, the smoke alarm
device with radio link can be affixed on
the longer wall as an exception.
Rooms with slanting ceilings:
For slanting ceilings with a gradient of
less than 20 degrees, the same rules as
those for horizontal ceilings are applica-
ble. In rooms with a ceiling slant more
than 20 degrees to the horizontal, heat
caps can build up in the tip of the cei-
ling, which will prevent the smoke from
reaching the smoke alarm device with
radio link. Therefore, the smoke alarm
device with radio link should be instal-
led at least 0.5m and maximum 1m from
the tip of the ceiling. Rooms that have
slanting (gradient more than 20 degrees)
and horizontal ceilings both, the smoke
alarm devices with radio links should be
installed on the horizontal ceiling only
if 0.5m distance from the surrounding
walls and slanting ceiling can be managed
(total more than 1m). Otherwise, the re-
gulations for rooms with tipped ceilings
are applicable where the tip of the ceiling
is a transition of the slant to the horizon-
tal part of the ceiling.
Monitored area:
The recommended monitored area per
smoke alarm device with radio link is up
to 60sqm per room with a room height
of maximum 6m. These dimensions also
include a corridor with a width more
than 3m. A room size more than 60sqm,
rooms with high partial walls or furniture
dividing the rooms and a room height
more than 6m require additional smoke
alarm devices with radio links. The same
