TECHNICAL TERMS

°Ω Dolby Digital
A compressed digital sound recorded on a DVD. Some DVDs record ordinary stereo sound in Dolby Digital, others record
surround sound of 5-channel maximum and bass specialized channel on the Dolby Digital. You can enjoy surround sound by
connecting the optical/coaxial digital output terminal of the player to the optical/coaxial digital input terminal of a Dolby Digital
decoder or built-in amplifier of a decoder.
°Ω Linear PCM (Pulse Code Modulati on)
A digital sound that is not compressed in a CD or a DVD.
°Ω M PEG A ud io
A digital sound recorded in other types of compression other than Dolby Digital.
°Ω T itl e
The largest unit of image or music recorded on a DVD. A number associated with a title is called 'Title Number'. When title
numbers are recorded on a disc, you can choose a title number to play (Chapter Search).
°Ω Chapter
This is a unit smaller than the title used to designate a picture or a musical piece recorded in a DVD. A chapter No. is a
number designated to a particular chapter. It is possible to choose a wanted chapter No. to play by using a CHAPTER
SEARCH operation when chapter numbers are recorded in a disc.
°Ω T rack
Images or music recorded on a CD or Video CD. A number associated with a chapter is called a 'Track Number'. When track
numbers are recorded on a disc, you can choose a track number to play (Track Search).
°Ω Vi deo CD
A disc that can playback video with an equivalent image quality of image of VHS. Thanks to a compression technique of
digital signals (MPEG 1 mode), continuous play of 74 minutes of digital images and sound is possible.
°Ω Playback Control (PBC)
A signal memorized in a Video CD for controlling the playback.
With PBC you can enjoy the playback of software allowing searches or simple interactive software by using the Menu Image
memorized on a Video CD. Furthermore, you can also enjoy high resolution/standard still images.
°Ω High resolu tion sti ll i mage
If there is a high resolution still image contained on a Video CD, it can be viewed in a resolution 4 times better than video.
°Ω Screen saver
When a still image is displayed for a long time, the image may appear as printed on the screen. To avoid this, a screen
saver is used. If you do not operate during a certain time, it will automatically darken the screen. In addition, it will display an
animated image to avoid strong light (luminous color) concentration on one spot of the screen.
°Ω Multi-angle
We watch a TV show in general from the same view point as the camera that is shooting it. In a TV studio there are several
cameras shooting and the program director chooses one among them to show. It is possible for a watcher to select a view
point (camera) if the images of all the cameras are broadcast simultaneously. Some DVDs record images shot by several
cameras simultaneously and let the player select a view point. This is called Multi-angle.
°Ω Aspect rati o
The ratio of width to height of a TV screen. An ordinary TV has a ratio of 4:3 and Wide TV or High Vision TV has a ratio of
16:9. With wide lateral spread images one feels as if one is on the spot.
°Ω Paren tal l ev el
A device for viewing restriction imposed on children by parents.
°Ω Subtitle language
A DVD subtitle may record as many as 32 languages and one may choose any one among them.
°Ω Region code
A region code that defines the geographical region in which playback is possible is preset in a DVD player and a DVD disc.
If the code recorded on a disc is not for the region where you want to playback the disc, it does not work The region codes
are as follows:
