7. Maintenance procedures

7.1. Replacing the air filter
Never use petrol or flammable solvents for cleaning the air filter element as this could result in a fire or explosion.
Danger
Undo the four securing lugs (no.1, fig F) and remove the air filter cover (no. 2, fig F).
Remove the foam element (no. 3, fig F) and the paper element (no. 4, fig F).
If they are to be re-used, clean the air filter elements by tapping them gently several times on a hard surface to eliminate excess
dirt, or pass low pressure compressed air through the filter. Never try to remove dirt using a brush. This will just push the dirt into
the fibres. Replace the paper element if it is too dirty.
Wipe the dirt from the inside of the air filter and cover, using a damp cloth. Be careful not to let dirt get into the air chamber that
leads to the carburettor.
Reassemble the air filter elements and cover. Replace the securing plates exactly in position.
7.2. Starter battery maintenance
Never place the battery close to a flame or fire
Use only insulated tools
Never use sulphuric acid or acid water to top up the electrolyte level.
Danger
As the battery is maintenance-free, just check the condition and tightness of the connections and its general cleanliness.
7.3. Replacing the oil filter
Empty the engine oil (see 7.2) and then remove the oil filter (no. 6, fig A) with a filter wrench and let any residual oil drain out.
Discard the oil filter.
Clean the base of the filter then smear the filter joint with clean oil and place the new filter in position.
Tighten the filter by hand until the joint touches, then screw the filter at the angle specified or tighten it with a torque wrench
(angle of orientation 1 3/4 turns or 22Nm).
Put the specified amount of oil in the engine, start the generating set, check for leaks and readjust the level if necessary.
7.4. Renewing the motor oil
Change the oil when the engine is still hot, to ensure that drainage is rapid and complete.
Remove the oil filler cap (no. 2, fig. D) and the drain plug (no. 3, fig. A), and empty the oil into a suitable container.
When this is done, replace the drain plug tightly and then fill with recommended oil to the upper marker on the dipstick.
Screw back the oil filler cap as far as it will go.
7.5. Replacing the fuel filter
Remove the air filter cover and elements, then remove the two 6 mm nuts and the two special 5 mm nuts from the air filter
housing.
Remove the air filter housing.
Take out the fuel filter (no. 5, fig C).
Make sure there is no water or sediment in the fuel filter, then put back the fuel filter and the air filter housing.
7.6. Checking the spark plug
Take off the spark plug cover (no. 2, fig A) and use a spark plug wrench to remove each spark plug.
Inspect each spark plug carefully and discard any that have worn electrodes or cracked or peeling insulation. If they are to be re-
used, clean the spark plugs with a metallic brush.
Measure the space between the electrodes with a thickness gauge. The distance between electrodes should be 0.7 to 0.8 mm.
Check that the spark plug washers are in good condition and screw them in by hand to avoid damaging the threads.
After inserting the spark plugs, tighten them using a spark plug wrench to secure the washer.
Spark plugs should only be cleaned using a scraper or a metallic brush and a clean cloth.
7.7. Checking bolts, nuts and screws
Daily, detailed checks of all nuts, bolts and screws are essential in order to prevent any accidents or breakdowns.
Inspect the generating set as a whole before and after each use.
Tighten any loose nuts or screws.
NB: the tightening of cylinder head bolts should be carried out by a specialist. Contact your local agent.
