d) Setting the Ball Differential

The differential in the front and rear axles can be set.
The manufacturer's pre-setting should, however, not
be changed without reason! Setting therefore should
only be performed by experienced model sportsmen.
For setting the ball differential, the upper transverse
link must be removed; then remove the drive axle.
In side the differential exit, you will see the screw (A).
Depending on how the manufacturer installed the dif-
ferential, this screw will be at the left or right of the
vehicle/differential.
Screw is tighter (= differential locked more
strongly):
• Higher torque transfer
• Front axle Vehicle understeers, less steering effect
but more stable when braking
• Rear axle: Vehicle understeers, tail may swerve
easier at the end of bends.
Screw is looser (= differential locked less)
• Lower torque transfer
• Front axle Tends to oversteer, better steering effect
but less directional stability during braking
• Rear axle: Less understeering at acceleration, stabler
in bends
Caution, important!
When the differential screw (A) is too loose, the balls (B) in the differential will slip over the pressure discs
(C). This can be heard as a loud whistling of the differential.
Thus, the differential heats up very strongly and is damaged very quickly (the balls are flattened and the
pressure discs grooved). Loss of warranty/guarantee!
When the screw is too tight, the driving behaviour will be impaired, the steering effect is lowered and the
vehicle understeers. Therefore if in doubt, tighten the screw a little more!
