so) is provided. Using this feature, you simply place one pad into the filter basket
and start the extraction.
For preparing usual, "normal" coffee, you simply dilute espresso, conveniently using
the hot water function of the »DESIGN ESPRESSO PRO«.
Even coffee specialities can be prepared without effort: milk froth, e.g. for cappuc-
cino and latté macchiato is available via the steam function—always freshly heated
and textured. Hot water and steam are directed into the cup or provided milk jug via
the fully swivel-mounted hot water / steam wand.
Note:
You may use the hot water function even for preparing small amounts (1-2 cups) of
other hot drinks (e.g. tea, cacao mixtures).

TIPS FOR BEST RESULTS

Preparing top-quality coffee is a result of the perfect balance of flavours and texture,
achieving the optimum combination of sweetness, acidity, and bitterness. You will
learn this art quite easily using your new espresso machine. This chapter will give
you good advice.
The flavour of your coffee will depend on many factors: origin and type of your
coffee beans, degree of roast, freshness, and grind size. Give it a try by varying
these factors one by one and checking the result against your own preferences. If
the coffee flows too fast (less than 9 seconds until it starts dripping), then a large
part of the flavouring substances remains in the coffee powder and the coffee is
watery, bland and with only poor crema. The resulting espresso will be under
extracted. In this case, the grind size is too coarse.
If the grind is too fine (looks like powder and feels like flour when rubbed bet-
ween fingers; more than 14 seconds until the coffee starts dripping), the water
will not flow through the coffee even when under pressure. The resulting espres-
so will be over extracted, dark in colour and bitter in flavour. The crema will be
stained. Use coffee powder with a somewhat coarser grind.
You can influence the flow rate of the coffee even by tamping the powder in the
filter basket with more or less pressure.

SELECTING THE APPROPRIATE FILTER BASKET

The flat 1 cup filter basket is designated for approx. 30 ml of espresso
(1 cup). Use the somewhat deeper filter basket for extracting approx. 60 ml (2 cups).
