16.5 CARE AND SERVICE LIFE

16.5.1 STORAGE AND TRANSPORT

Optimal storage conditions are:
Dry, in the dark, cool and outside transport containers,
protected from direct sunlight, chemicals, heat and
mechanical damage.
Wetness and icing can adversely affect the durability
and strength of harnesses and ropes. If the harness
becomes wet or icy during use (when used in snow/
ice), make sure that it is dried slowly (before storage)
outside direct sunlight - never in tumble dryers or on
radiators.
16.5.2 CLEANING
Clean soiled products with a mild synthetic detergent
in lukewarm water by hand in the bathtub. Rinse well
and dry slowly out of direct sunlight - never in tumble
dryers or on radiators.
16.5.3 EFFECTS OF CHEMICALS
Contact with chemicals, especially acids, must be
avoided at all costs. Chemicals can damage the
product so that its safety is no longer guaranteed and it
can fail even at low loads. Acid damage is not visually
visible. After contact with acids (e.g. battery acid) the
product must be replaced immediately.

16.5.4 ACCESSORIES

Only intended for use with products standardised for
mountaineering. The respective individual guidelines
must be observed.
16.5.5 ELIMINATION
The service life is influenced by numerous factors,
such as frequency of use, mechanical stress, climatic
influences, maintenance, etc.
In the following cases, the product must be sorted out
immediately:
• after a hard fall (extreme mechanical load)
• damage to seam patterns or tapes (heavy abrasion,
sharp edges)
• irreversible heavy soiling (e.g. fats, bitumen, oils,
etc.)
• after thermal load, contact or friction heat, with
visible traces of melting
• if you doubt its reliability
• if the complete history of use is not known
• if the product is obsolete (changes in legislation,
standards and technical regulations, incompatibility
with other equipment, etc.).
If the product is stored in an optimal way without use,
it should be discarded after 10 years at the latest.
