2.3 Function
Upper Joint Section (2) with adjustment pyramid and Lower Joint Section (1) of the four-axes
joint are connected by Posterior (3 + 4) and Anterior (5) Linkage Bars. Due to its polycentricity
the joint provides a rotational and translational movement. The centre of rotation (instantaneous
centre of rotation) changes its position dependent on the degree of flexion. In the extended posi-
tion the centre of rotation is placed at the height of the femoral condyles. It moves downward and
forward with increased flexion.
The small integrated Hydraulic Swing Phase Control (15) provides resistance to motion, thus
enabling the lower leg to move harmonically and naturally. Other than mechanical gait controls,
the hydraulic system automatically accommodates to the different walking speeds. The amount
of resistance to motion (damping resistance) can be regulated by adjusting the size of the orifices
through which the fluid flows. The movements of flexion and extension may be separately adjusted
(refer to section 5).
2.4 Service life

Only use the product for a single patient.
As a basic principle, all Ottobock knee joints are subjected to tests involving three million load
cycles. Depending on the amputee's activity this corresponds to a service life of three to five years.
