5. Safety instructions
General safety instructions
Get to know your machine
• Only trained adults may operate the machine, nev-
er children.
• Read and understand the operating manual and safe-
ty instructions for the machine. Learn its use and limi-
tations as well as its inherent potential dangers.
• You must familiarise yourself with the controls and
proper operation. You must know how to stop the
machine and shut down the controls quickly.
• Do not attempt to operate the machine until you ful-
ly understand how to properly operate and maintain
the engine and how to avoid accidental injury and/
or property damage.
Working range
• Never start or allow the engine to run in an enclosed
area. The exhaust gases are dangerous because
they contain carbon monoxide, an odourless and
deadly gas. Only operate this unit in a well-ventilat-
ed outdoor area.
• Never operate the machine when visibility is poor.
• Never operate the machine on steep terrain.
Personal safety
• Do not operate the machine while under the influ-
ence of drugs, alcohol or medication as they will
impair your ability to use the machine properly.
• Dress appropriately. Wear long trousers, boots and
gloves. Do not wear loose clothing, shorts or jewellery
of any kind. Fix long hair in place so that it is above
shoulder height. Keep hair, clothing and gloves away
from moving parts. Loose-fitting clothing, jewellery or
long hair may become caught in the moving parts.

• Use safety equipment. Always wear safety goggles,
hearing protection, safety gloves and safety shoes
which may be used for the appropriate conditions.
• Check your machine before starting. Safety devic-
es must be in their intended location and be in per-
fect condition. Make sure that all nuts, pins, etc. are
tight. Disengage all clutches and put the engine in
neutral before starting it.
• Never operate the machine it if needs to be re-
paired or is not in perfect condition. Replace dam-
aged, missing or defective parts before use. Check
the fuel system for leaks. The machine must always
be in a safe operating condition.
• Never make any unauthorised changes to the safe-
ty devices. Check that they are operating properly
on a regular basis.
• Do not use the machine if the throttle does not turn
the engine on or off. Any petrol-driven machine that
cannot be operated with the throttle is dangerous
and must be replaced.
• Get accustomed to checking whether the tool and
adjustment key have been removed from the ma-
chine before starting it. An adjustment key or tool
which is left on a rotating part of the machine can
result in bodily injuries.
• Remain vigilant and use the machine with common
sense.
• Do
not
ed, with sandals or similar light footwear.
Wear
safety
and improve your grip on slippery surfaces.
Always maintain your footing and balance. This
gives you better control over the machine in unex-
pected situations.
• Avoid unintentionally starts. Ensure that the engine
ignition is in the OFF position before transporting
the machine or carrying out any maintenance or
repair work on the unit. Transporting or performing
maintenance or repair work on a machine with the
ignition on can cause accidents.
Fuel safety
• Fuel is extremely flammable and its vapours can
explode if they are ignited. Be careful during use in
order to reduce the risk of serious bodily injuries.
• When filling up or draining the fuel tank, use a proper
fuel tank in a clean, well ventilated area outdoors.
Do not smoke or allow sparks, naked flames or other
ignition sources near when adding fuel or operating
the unit. Never refill the fuel tank in enclosed spaces.
• Keep earthed conductive objects, such as tools,
away from live electrical parts and connections
to avoid spark formation or arcing. These events
could ignite fuel vapours.
• Always switch off the engine and let it cool down before
refilling the fuel tank. Never remove the fuel tank cover
or add fuel while the engine is running or hot. Never
operate the machine if there is a leak in the fuel system.
