4.3

Operating principle

The Acculan 4 Charger is designed for a mains voltage range of 100 V~ to
120 V~ (0.8 A to 0.7 A) or 220 V~ to 240 V~ (0.5 A to 0.4 A). The mains
voltage is converted into a protective extra-low voltage. To make the char-
ger ready for operation, connect it to mains power using the mains power
cord. No other action is required to activate or deactivate the console. The
charger performs a self-test, which takes approx. 3 seconds. During this
test, all indicator elements at the front panel of the charger are illumi-
nated.
Charging bays
The Acculan 4 Charger has four separate, independent slots that are com-
patible with the Acculan 4 battery GA346, and with the Acculan battery
GA676 and GA666. Each charging bay has an indicator field on the charger
front panel assigned to it.
Automatic start of charging process
Charging starts automatically as soon as a battery is inserted in a charging
bay. The charging time in all four charging bays depends on the charge
state and capacity of the batteries.
Li-Ion battery GA346
Charging principle
The batteries are charged very gently. The charge state of the battery is
continuously monitored throughout charging. Monitoring of the charging
curve ensures that the battery is fully charged without overcharging. Addi-
tionally, the battery temperature and charging time are monitored as well.
The Li-Ionen batteries GA346 undergo an automatic battery check. This
check assesses the battery condition.
If the "Battery change recommended" symbol lights up, replacement of the
battery is recommended. This battery can still be used. However, it must
be taken into account that an intraoperative battery change may be nec-
essary due to the reduced performance, or a safety function may activate.
Battery temperature
Each charging bay is equipped with a fan, which works independently of
the battery temperature. The charging of the battery is aborted at a bat-
tery temperature of >45 °C. Excessive battery temperature is indicated by
the "Action request" symbol illuminated in indicator field. When the bat-
tery temperature drops, the "Action request" symbol in indicator field 2
still remains illuminated. The battery must be removed from the respective
charging bay and plugged in again. to restart charging.

Charging time
Charging is stopped as soon as the maximum charging time is reached. The
permanent monitoring of the battery also allows detecting faults in the
battery block. When a battery fault or a charging fault is detected, this is
indicated by the "Action request" symbol illuminated in indicator field 2
and charging is aborted.
NiMH battery GA676 and GA666
Charging principle
The batteries are charged very gently with constant current pulses. The
charge state of the battery is continuously monitored throughout charg-
ing. Monitoring of the charging curve ensures that the battery is fully
charged without overcharging. Additionally, the battery temperature and
charging time are monitored as well.
The NiMH GA676 and GA666 batteries undergo an automatic battery
check. This check assesses the battery condition.
The charging of the battery is aborted at a bat-
tery temperature of >47 °C. Excessive battery temperature is indicated by
the "Action request" symbol illuminated in indicator field 2. When the
battery temperature drops, the "Action request" symbol in indicator field 2
still remains illuminated.
After a successfully completed charging process,
the charger switches to trickle charging.
Note
The Acculan 4 Charger has a function for maintaining the maximum charge
when a battery is left in the charger after complete recharging.
