Children and bicycles
Please note that your child must first familiarise themself with the new bike.
Avoid hazardous situations when riding a bike.
Only once children are secure in mastering bike riding should they be allowed to participate in street traffic under adult
supervision.
The law clearly designates the pavement as the riding surface for children under the age of 8!
The use of the pavement is even permitted until the end of their 10th year.
In general, a child cannot be considered a fully-fledged road user until the age of 12 to 14.
Conduct in road traffic
Teach your children the proper conduct in traffic early on. Actively support them with advice and resources when it comes to
traffic rules. Play streets and other zones where traffic is banned are particularly well-suited as practise areas for the future
road users.
Ensure your child is properly dressed.
Clothes should be as bright and conspicuous as possible (reflective stripes) so that your child is noticed early enough by other
road users.
Set a good example:
You and your children should never ride without a protective helmet. If you make wearing the helmet your duty, it will have a
positive effect on your child. They will follow your example and always wear a helmet.
Make sure the helmet fits properly and is of good quality.
A bike helmet must comply with the standard DIN EN 1078 and must bear the CE symbol.
Wearing a bike helmet is recommended for the safety of all bicycle riders and should become self-evident
in much the same way as putting on seat belts in a car.
