If the bike is equipped with a standard rim (or calliper) brake, first release
the cable anchor for basic adjustment. Then press both brake pads against
the rim (right and left simultaneously). At the same time, pull the lower end of
the Bowden cable taut (use pliers) and fix it by tightening the cable anchor.
You can readjust the brake. For readjustments, release the lock nut so that the
adjustment screw can be unscrewed. Afterwards, tighten the lock nut again.
If the bike is equipped with a cantilever brake, then the centres of rotation of the
brake arms (callipers) are the special holders that are welded to the bicycle forks
on the front brakes. For basic adjustment, release the cable clamping screw. Then
press both brake pads against the rim (right and left simultaneously). Pull the lower
end of the Bowden cable (use pliers) further down. Afterwards, firmly tighten the
cable clamping screw. By releasing nut A (with a 10 mm spanner) the brake pads can
be positioned so they are precisely centred. Following this adjustment, firmly tighten
the nut again. The brake can be synchronised with the spring adjusting screw. By
turning this screw, the spring tension can be aligned with the other brake calliper.
Please ensure that all brake levers are tightened firmly.
To optimise the functionality of the brakes you must observe the following:
Outer cables may not be bent or broken.
The braking surfaces (wheel rims) must be grease-free and clean.
Align the brake callipers so they are centred.
Take care when you attach the brake shoe that it is properly positioned. When wet, the effectiveness of the frontal
brake is diminished. This means a longer brake path.
The contact of the brake pad with the rim results in wear and tear.
The attrition of the rim is significantly lower than the abrasion of the brake pad. The front brake must be re-adjusted if after
some time the brake cable has become elongated and/or the brake pads have been worn down. When replacing the brake
pads, ensure that they are suited for aluminium rims. Nevertheless, the rim shoulders must also be examined when rim brakes
are used. If you are unsure about the regulations regarding wear and tear, ask your specialist. As a rule, you must replace the
rims when the limits on wear and tear have been reached.
In case of doubt, the brake settings must be performed by a professional.
The children's bike is equipped with a back pedal brake hub; this brake is integrated into the rear wheel hub and requires
neither maintenance nor adjustment. However, please note that the brake will not work if the chain is torn or has jumped off.
On long and steep descents it is essential that you also make alternate use of the front wheel brake to avoid overheating of the
rear wheel brake. Overheating of the hub can lead to a loss of lubricant and result in a sharp braking effect.
