W HAT ARE M ICRO WAVES?

Micro waves are generated in the micro wave o ven
by a magnetro n and cause the water mo lecules in
the fo o d to o scillate.

SUITABLE O VEN WARE

GLASS AND CERAMIC GLASS

suitable. The co o king pro cess can be
o bserved fro m all sides. They must no t,
ho wever, co ntain any metal (e.g . lead
crystal), no r have a metallic o verlay (e.g. go ld edge,
co balt blue finish).
CERAMICS
G enerally very suitable. Ceramics must be glazed,
since with unglazed ceramics mo isture can get into
the ceramic. Mo isture causes the material to heat up
a nd ma y ma ke it sha tter.

PORCELAIN
Very suitable. Ensure that the po rcelain do es no t

ROASTING BAGS
Can be used in a micro wave o ven. Metal clips are
no t suitable fo r fastening them since the ro asting bag
fo il might melt. Fasten the ro asting bag with string
and pierce it several times with a fo rk. N o n heat-
resistant fo o d wraps are no t reco mmended fo r use in
a micro wave o ven.

W hen using the bro wning dish a suitable insulato r,
e.g. a po rcelain plate, must be placed between the
turntable and the browning dish. Be careful to adhere
e xa c tly to the p re -he a ting time g ive n in the
manufacturer ' s instructions. Excessive pre-heating can
damage the turntable and the turntable stand or can
trigger the safety-device which will switch off the oven.
METAL
G enerally speaking, metal should not be used, since
microwaves do not pass through metal and therefore
c a nno t re a c h the fo o d . The re a re , ho w e ve r,
exceptions: small strips of aluminium foil may be used
to cover certain parts of the food, so that these do not
tha w to o q uic kly o r b e g in to c o o k (e .g . c hic ke n
wings).Small metal skewers and aluminium containers
(e.g . o f ready- co o ked meals) can be used. They
must, however, be small in relation to the food, e.g.
aluminium containers must be at least

fo o d into a dish suitable fo r use in the micro wave.
W hen using aluminium co ntainers o r o ther metal

If yo u are no t sure whether yo ur utensil
is suitable fo r use in yo ur micro wave
o ven, carry o ut the fo llo wing test: Place
the utensil into the o ven. Place a g lass
co ntainer filled with 1 5 0 ml o f water
o n o r next to the utensil. Switch o n the o ven at 8 0 0
W po wer fo r 1 to 2 minutes. If the utensil stays co o l
o r just warm to the to uch, it is suitable. Do no t use
this test o n a plastic utensil. It co uld melt.
