8.2. Retooling the Extruder

Introduction
The extruder is the main unit for 3D printing with the BigRep STUDIO. The extruder
contains the hotends where the filament is heated and then squeezed through the
nozzles (e) and (f). The BigRep STUDIO is equipped with a dual extruder with two
hotends that can be replaced separately.
The two nozzles can be used simultaneously for separate printing tasks e.g. to
print additional support material for supporting structures alongside the main ob-
ject.
For replacing the entire extruder, or just one or both hotends, it is necessary to
remove the extruder from the machine. The procedure is described step by
step below.
Please note
If the LEDs at the bottom of the extruder light up, this
means that the extruder is connected to the printer.
The nozzles (e) and (f) are firm components of the hot-
ends (Fig. 8-3 and Fig. 8-4) and may not be exchanged
separately.
Disassembling the extruder beyond the steps described
in this instruction renders the warranty/guarantee null
and void.
