• Tobacco smoke
The smoke detector cannot recognise whether it is just "harmless" cigarette/cigar smoke or a
genuine fire. This can often cause erroneous fire alarms. If you smoke in house, this can make
operation of the smoke detectors difficult or even impossible.

There are smoke detectors which possess a sensitivity setting. In the event of a real fire,
this however causes late triggering of an alarm, which allows less response time for
extinguishing a fire or rescue or flight of persons.
