On receiving your harness
Delivery
In advance of a sale, a NOVA partner must check the harness and ensure it is adjusted
to the basic settings. Any defects should have been identified even before the sale.
Accessories included
Your harness will be delivered with the following items:
• Two NOVA Stratus carabiners
• Parachute deployment handle
• Integrated Y-bridle
• User manual
• Stickers
Airbag
The NOVA ALTUS is fitted with two airbag systems:
• One Pre-inflated Airbag, situated under the seat board. The Pre-inflated Airbag ad-
dresses one of the main disadvantages of traditional airbag systems – even before
take off the bag begins to inflate. Our system guarantees protection before take off.
• Secondly, there is an airbag situated behind the pilot's back which is inflated using
two scoops. This provides additional support for the spinal area.
With this combination of two protection systems, the ALTUS offers a high degree of
passive safety. It has to be acknowledged that any protection system has limitations.
By far the most effective safety measure is active flying and a correct assessment of
the risks.
Airbag Protection
Pre-inflated Airbag
Airbag: fitting/checking the foam mesh
The Pre-inflated Airbag works thanks to a foam mesh, which gives the underside of
the harness its predetermined shape. The foam mesh is built-in. In rare cases it may be
necessary to check the correct fitting of the mesh. If you suspect that the Pre-inflated
Airbag is not inflating correctly, please check the following:
• Open the zip under the Abrasion Protector and empty the storage compartment.
• In the compartment you will find a further zip. Open it.
• Within this second compartment there are three modules made of covered foam: one
large curved one as well as two rectangular ones. All three foam modules are faste-
ned to the harness using Velcro.
• The rectangular foam modules create the lateral curves; the large foam module sha-
pes the underside. The large foam module must be fitted into the harness so that
the end with two closely positioned Velcro strips is closest to the zip (opening of the
compartment).The pointed sides of the long rectangular modules should be oriented
towards the seat plate.
• The adjustment is correct when all three foam modules are fastened in their respecti-
ve positions using the Velcro straps. All Velco must be connected.
• If the modules cannot be fitted into position correctly, please contact a NOVA Service
Partner.
Checking the Pre-inflated Airbag is an important and necessary step during service
and inspection.
Adjustments: basics
Before the first flight, the harness should be adjusted on the ground. Clip the harness
into a spreader bar, sit in it and close the buckles. It is even more helpful if you wear
your usual flying clothes – a thick jacket can have a marked influence on seating posi-
tion.
The ALTUS is delivered configured in its basic setting. You will recognise this by the red
stitching on the black straps.
Please note: regardless of how you adjust the harness – it is essential that the adjust-
ments are symmetric. Asymmetric adjustments can lead to turns and therefore unin-
tended negative consequences in extreme flight situations.
Please test your adjustments in calm flying conditions. While in the air, make note of
the changes you wish to make. After the flight you can then make further adjustments
to change the harness settings.
