NEGATIVE PRESSURE WOUND
THERAPY APPLICATION
WARNING: Review all KCI® NPWT
Gauze Dressing Safety Information
before initiating NPWT.
1. Remove V.A.C.® Canister from packaging and
insert into the V.A.C.® Therapy Unit until it
locks into place.
NOTE: If the canister is not fully engaged, the
V.A.C.® Therapy Unit will alarm.
2. Connect SensaT.R.A.C.™
Pad tubing to canister
Fig. 11
tubing and ensure clamp
on each tube is open (Fig.
11). Position clamps away
from patient.
3. Turn on power to the V.A.C.® Therapy Unit
and select the prescribed therapy setting.
4. Initiate NPWT. Assess KCI® NPWT Gauze
Dressing to ensure seal integrity. The KCI®
NPWT Gauze Dressing may appear atter
and slightly rm. There should be no
hissing sounds. For ActiV.A.C.®, InfoV.A.C.®
and V.A.C.Ulta™ Therapy Units use the Seal
Check™ screen to verify that the rate of air
leakage is below the alarm threshold. If
there is any evidence of non-integrity, check
SensaT.R.A.C.™ Pad and drape seals, tubing
connections and canister insertion, and
ensure clamps are open.
5. Secure excess tubing to prevent interference
with patient mobility.
NOTE: Refer to therapy unit speci c user
guide or manual and / or quick reference guide
for information regarding alarms.
NOTE: If a leak source is identi ed, patch
with additional drape to ensure seal integrity.
NOTE: If the wound is over a bony
prominence or in areas where weight bearing
may exert additional pressure or stress to the
underlying tissues, a pressure redistribution
(pressure relief) surface or device should be
used to optimize patient o oading.
WARNING: Pressure Points: Monitor location
of tubing connectors, caps and clamps in
relation to patient position to minimize pressure
points.
WARNING: NPWT should remain on
in the CONTINUOUS mode for the
duration of the treatment. There may
be situations when the patient needs
to be disconnected from the V.A.C.®
Therapy Unit for example for activities
of daily living and diagnostic
testing. If the patient needs to be
disconnected, the tubing should be
clamped and the ends of the tubing
protected. How long patients may
be disconnected from the V.A.C.®
Therapy Unit is a clinical decision
based on individual characteristics of
the patient and the wound. Factors
to be considered would include;
amount of drainage, location of the
wound, integrity of the dressing seal,
assessment of bacterial burden in the
wound and patient's risk of infection.
