KCI® NPWT GAUZE DRESSING
APPLICATION FOR SINGLE WOUNDS
1. Assess wound dimensions and pathology,
including the presence of undermining or
tunnels. Do not place KCI® NPWT Gauze
Dressing into blind / unexplored tunnels.
The KCI® NPWT Gauze Dressing may be used
for wounds with shallow undermining or
explored tunnels.
NOTE: If adjunct materials are utilized
under the KCI® NPWT Gauze Dressing, they
must be meshed or fenestrated to allow
for e ective exudate removal and negative
pressure delivery. Document on the drape and
in the patient's chart to ensure removal with
subsequent dressing changes.
2. Moisten gauze with saline.
3. Place saline-moistened
gauze gently into wound
without overlapping onto
intact skin (Fig. 1). Be
sure entire wound bed

comes in contact with
moist gauze. If desired,
add the remainder of
moist gauze either at or
u up to ll the voided
space. Do not force
gauze into any area of the
wound.
CAUTION: Do not cut the gauze over the
wound, as fragments may fall into the wound.
Away from wound site, remove any fragments
or loose particles that may fall into or be left in
the wound upon gauze removal.
NOTE: Ensure contact between adjacent
pieces of gauze for even distribution of
negative pressure.
NOTE: Super cial or retention sutures should
be covered with a single layer of non-adherent
material placed between the sutures and the
V.A.C.® Drape.
4. Keep intact skin dry. Skin protectant may be
applied to periwound.
5. Note the total number of pieces of dressing
components used in the wound and
document on the patient's chart and on the
V.A.C.® Drape.

V.A.C.® DRAPE APPLICATION
CAUTION: Patient's skin condition should be
carefully monitored (refer to Precautions, Protect
Periwound Skin section).
1. Trim and place the V.A.C.®
Drape to cover the
gauze and an additional
3 - 5 cm border of intact
periwound tissue (Fig.
Fig. 2
2). Drape may be cut
into multiple pieces for
easier handling, retaining
a portion of the Blue
Handling Tab on each
piece. Use any excess
drape to seal di cult
areas, if needed.
2. Partially pull back one
side of Layer 1 to expose
adhesive (Fig. 3). Be sure
to hold Layer 1 ap back
to prevent readherence to

drape.
3. Place the adhesive face
down over gauze and
apply drape to cover
gauze and intact skin,
ensuring drape covers at

least a 3 - 5 cm border of
intact periwound tissue
(Fig. 4).
4. Remove remaining Layer
1 backing material and
pat drape to ensure an
occlusive seal.

5. Remove green-striped
stabilization Layer 2 (Fig.
5).
6. Remove perforated Blue
Handling Tabs from drape
(Fig. 6).

SENSAT.R.A.C.™ PAD APPLICATION
NOTE: Do not cut o the pad or insert the tubing
directly into the KCI® NPWT Gauze Dressing. This
may occlude the tubing and cause the V.A.C.®
Therapy Unit to alarm.
1. Choose pad application site. Give particular
consideration to uid ow, tubing
positioning to allow for optimal ow, and
avoid placement over bony prominences or
within creases in the tissue.
2. Pinch drape and cut a
2.5
cm
2.5 cm hole through the
drape (not a slit) (Fig.
7). The hole should be
large enough to allow
Fig. 7
for removal of uid and
/ or exudate. It is not
necessary to cut into the
gauze.
NOTE: Cut a hole rather than a slit, as a slit
may self-seal during therapy.
3. Apply pad, which has a central disc and a
surrounding outer adhesive skirt.
a. Remove both backing
Layers 1 and 2 to expose
adhesive (Fig. 8).
Fig. 8
b. Place pad opening in
Fig. 9
central disc directly over
hole in drape (Fig. 9).
c. Apply gentle pressure on
the central disc and outer
skirt to ensure complete
Fig. 10
adhesion of the pad.
d. Pull back on blue tab to
remove pad stabilization
layer (Fig. 10).
NOTE: For wounds that are smaller
than the central disc of the pad, it is very
important that the central disc not come in
contact with intact skin in order to prevent
periwound maceration. It may be necessary
to augment the gauze that is in the wound
with an additional piece of gauze cut 1 - 2 cm
larger than the diameter of the central disc.
This allows the central disc to lay on top of
gauze only. If this is used, please ensure the
periwound skin is protected prior to gauze
augmentation.
