1. Purpose – what are medical compression stoc-
kings used for?
Medical compression stockings are an integral part of

compression therapy. Compression therapy is part of the
treatment for venous, lymphatic and mixed edema and is
one of the irreplaceable methods of conservative care.

2. Performance characteristics – how do health com-
pression stockings work?
The mechanism of action is to reduce capillary filtration
into the interstitium, assist in the resorption of tissue

fluid (and crystalloids) into the venous capillary arm,
accelerate lymph flow through the lymphatic system, and
enhance the venous-lymphatic-muscle pump effect. This
spectrum of effects minimizes or completely eliminates

the adverse effects of venous reflux, venostasis and
lymphostasis.

has different indications and areas of use due to the nature
of the material and the available compression classes.
