6.4. Overcoming stairs and high
steps
•
The helpers may only grasp at firmly mounted frame parts. Do not lift
the wheelchair by the legrests or armrests.
•
When going up stairs, the rear assistant pulls the wheelchair over the
step using the permanently mounted handles (Fig. 38).
•
The lower assistant grips the front frame tubes (Fig. 39), NOT the
legrests, and stabilises the position. In doing so, he presses the rear
wheels of the wheelchair against the steps.
38.
•
When descending, the lower helper brakes by pushing the wheelchair
straight against the steps. The upper helper holds the wheelchair by
the push handles, secures it and keeps it in the correct position. The
wheelchair should roll down one step at a time.
39.
6.5. Driving with the wheelchair
Sit in your Bischoff & Bischoff wheelchair. Make sure that you sit as
far back as possible. Locomotion and braking is done via the handrims
on the drive wheels (Fig. 40). Carry out the first driving attempts
carefully until you have become accustomed to the wheelchair and its
driving behaviour. Wheelchairs have only limited tipping and sliding
safety. Take special care when braking, starting or turning on slopes.
40.
For high stairs and stairs with more than 3 steps,
2 accompanying persons must help.
The lifting points for the transport of the wheel chair
are exlusively the frame and the push handles. It is not
allowed to use the armrest for lifting the wheelchair!
