Blood sampling with an NBSS or NBSS
Follow the instructions below for blood sampling with an NBSS or NBSS
13.4.1
56
To ensure correct use of the SWAN Switch 4-way stopcock, only blood sampling containers and adapters manufactured in accor-
dance with the applicable standards and which are CE marked may be connected at the side port. Lockable Luer lock systems
are recommended for this application. When using Luer slip systems, it must be ensured that they are connected to the side port
very carefully, twisting by 90°. Inserting Luer slip systems into the valve on the side port without twisting may damage the valve.
A 45° position of the SWAN switch 4-way stopcock is not permitted because the fl ow channel of the sampling point is
not closed and this can lead to the ingress/leakage of liquids, air and/or pathogens.
For complication-free blood sampling, follow the application steps in 13.3.5.

For blood gas analyses, it is recommended that twice the dead-space volume (confi guration-dependent liquid volume bet-
ween the patient vessel and the sampling port) be removed prior to the blood sampling process. For coagulation diagnostics,
more mixing volume may need to be removed from the pressure monitoring set. The blood sampling systems (NBSS, NBSS
ABSS & ABSS
) within the pressure monitoring set of the manufacturer CODAN pvb Critical Care are confi gured in such a
XL
way that with a completely fi lled reservoir and when using a catheter with an external diameter of ≤ 1.3 mm (18 G/4 Ch) and a
length of ≤ 20 cm, at least twice the dead-space volume can be removed. If, however, it is clinically necessary and unavoidable
to use a catheter with an external diameter greater than 1.3 mm and/or a length greater than 20 cm, the dead-space volume of
the pressure monitoring set must be determined prior to blood sampling to ensure that undiluted blood samples can be taken
for blood analyses using the blood sampling system. To work out the confi guration-dependent dead-space volume, draw liquid
into a blood sampling container until blood can be seen at the intended sampling port. The withdrawn volume is then read off
using the scale on the blood sampling container, and multiplied by a factor of 2. The result of this multiplication specifi es the
volume that must be removed prior to a withdrawal in order to ensure that undiluted blood samples can be taken for blood gas
analysis. If the calculated volume cannot be withdrawn from this reservoir, the dead-space volume must be reduced for the
application (for example, by using a catheter with a smaller internal volume) or more mixing volume must be removed prior
to the blood sampling (for example, by removing mixed blood with an additional blood sampling container). A blood sample
diluted with saline solution leads to invalid blood analysis results.
