6. Test prerequisites

The following test prerequisites must be fulfilled before implementing the functional tests:
- Compliance with replacement interval for test gauge (refer also to Section 5).
- Scales calibrated (refer to operating instructions for scales).
- AdBlue tank filled with pure AdBlue. The AdBlue must have the correct concentration.
Dilution with water is not permissible and would lead to malfunctioning and faults.
- AdBlue in tank reasonably fresh (max. 1-2 years old depending on manufacturer's
specifications). If there is a possibility of the contents of the tank being too old, the tank and
system must be drained and re-filled.
- Diluted or old AdBlue can be detected by testing it with a hand-held refractometer (0 986 610
511). Test the AdBlue in the tank with the refractometer. Set value: 32.5% +/-1.5%. When in
doubt, fill with fresh AdBlue.
- Test the AdBlue for diesel fuel contamination using oil test strips (0 986 610 521). If
theAdBlue tank is equipped with a dipstick, use it to moisten the oil test strip. If there is no
dipstick installed, remove the AdBlue from the tank using a clean, thin PVC hose. Any
impurities from diesel fuel or another mineral oil will cause the oil test strips to change colour.
A weak, positive reaction can be caused by only 50 mg/l of diesel fuel in the AdBlue. 100
mg/l will result in a clear, positive reaction.
If AdBlue is contaminated with diesel fuel or dirt, all parts must be cleaned or replaced.
- If the tank is deformed (i.e. contracted) or if air hisses in when opening the tank as a result of
a strong vacuum, this could indicate that the tank's purge control is blocked. Rectify the fault.
- All tests should be carried out in workshop temperature of 15 °C to 35 °C. Outside this
temperature range, the results of the tests will be distorted.
Never use the pressure gauge or test pressure pipe from diesel set 1.
Serious damage will result if residual AdBlue ingresses into the fuel system or
diesel fuel into the exhaust gas treatment system.
Attention:
When assembling electric and hydraulic test and measurement leads, ensure that they
are not overstretched, crushed or bent. This may lead to premature failure, and to
inaccurate measurement results in the hydraulic leads. Furthermore, ensure that the
connector ends of the electric and hydraulic leads join correctly during assembly.
Parts wetted with AdBlue should be cleaned as described in chapter
"11.1 Cleaning of Individual Components" in order to guarantee their multiple usage.
