BATTERY SAVING MODE (BSM):
Lead Acid (BSM) + Lithium (BSM)
BSM is designed to save the motorcycle battery from being drained to a low voltage
level, and causing damage to the battery.
LEAD ACID BSM – IDEAL FOR AGM/MF/WET BATTERIES
- The BSM kicks in at <13.3 Volts, this shows that the motorbike alternator is not
running, the battery is faulty or the load on the system of the motorbike is too high.
At this voltage, the BSM kicks in cutting the power to the grips and the BSM LED
flashes green.
- The HotGrips® will then read and record the voltage over a 2 second period to
confirm that the voltage has dropped below this set level.
- The BMS will continue to flash and provide no power to the grips but will continue
to monitor the battery voltage level. This will happen for a period of 5 mins – if the
voltage remains within this voltage bracket the controller will turn off.
OR
- Once the threshold voltage level reaches <12.8V (over the 2 second period) the
grips will completely cut off within 15 seconds.
- If the voltage level rises above 13.3V before the <12.8V time limit has been reached
the grips will kick back in and provide heat to the grips – cancelling BSM
LITHIUM BSM – IDEAL FOR LIFEPO4 PERFORMANCE BATTERIES
- The BSM kicks in at <14.0 Volts, this shows that the motorbike alternator is not
running, the battery is faulty or the load on the system of the motorbike is too high.
This will happen for a period of 5 mins – if the
voltage remains within this voltage bracket the controller will turn off
OR
- Once the threshold voltage level reached <13.6V (over the 2 second period) the
grips will completely cut off within 15 seconds.
- If the voltage level rises above 14.0V before the <13.6V time limit has been reached
the grips will kick back in and provide heat to the grips – cancelling BSM
If the battery is damaged, has an extremely small capacity (AH) or the motorcycle has
a large drain from other accessories then the batteries running voltage may be low
enough to trigger the BSM to protect the battery.
In the case that the motorcycles battery has an extremely small capacity (AH), the
HotGrips® should be wired to a 'switched live' and the BSM should be turned OFF.
CHANGING BETWEEN BSM MODES:
There are 3 BSM settings, Lead Acid, OFF and Lithium BSM. To change between
modes ensure the HotGrips® are already on, press and hold the power button for 5/7
seconds, this process will turn off the HotGrips® however, please keep holding until
the green light (flash) is visible. The number of flashes will indicate which mode the
HotGrips® are now in, this will need to be repeated to cycle through the 3 settings.
The HotGrips® are preset to Lead Acid BSM from factory.
'1' Flash – Lead Acid (AGM/MF/WET)
'3' Flashes – OFF
'5' Flashes – Lithium (LiFePO4)
WARNING – TURNING OFF BATTERY SAVING MODE MAY RESULT IN
DRAINING THE BATTERY WHEN THE HOTGRIPS® ARE CONNECTED
DIRECTLY TO THE BATTERY.
