Extension Assist
The Extension Assist is an optional feature that facilitates full knee
extension. Use of the Extension Assist is only recommended when the
patient is unable to extend the knee to engage the Geometric Lock.
Three springs of different stiffness are included with the Extension assist:
• Yellow: regular (comes pre-installed with the unit),
• Blue: firm, and
• Red: extra firm.
Installation of the Extension Assist (Fig. 9)
1. Remove the Bumper Cover (A), Bumper (B), and Shims (C).
2. Install the Spring Cup (D) into the Hole (E) inside the Distal Tube
Connector.
3. Firmly seat the Spring Cup by gently tapping it with a rubber mallet
(or a similar hand tool).
4. Place the Ferrule (F) over the Cable (G).
5. Place the Spring (H) over the Cable and Ferrule (try the yellow spring
first).
6. Insert the Cable and Spring into the Spring Cup, with the ball end of
the Cable first.
7. Slide ball end of the Cable through the Hole (E) in the Tube
Connector and insert the ball into the Slot on the device's Bottom
Link (I) by using needle-nose pliers or a small screwdriver.
8. Re-install the selected Shims, Bumper, and Bumper Cover.
Follow-up check
• Reassess adjustments after a couple of weeks.
• It may be necessary to change the Shim and Bumper adjustments
after the patient has gained some experience with the device.
• Over time, the patient's increased device experience, confidence
during use, and proficiency may warrant a change to a firmer Bumper
and/or an increase in Shim thickness.
