2.2 Function

The orthotic system features a microprocessor-controlled stance and swing phase.
Based on the measurements of an integrated sensor system, the microprocessor controls
hydraulics that influence the damping (resistive movement) behaviour of the knee joint. The
sensor data are updated and evaluated 50 times per second. This adapts the behaviour of the
orthosis to the current movement situation (gait phase) dynamically and in real time.
Thanks to the microprocessor-controlled stance and swing phase, the system can be individually
adapted to the needs of the patient. In order to do so, the system is adjusted by the Orthotist
using special software.
The orthotic system offers a 2nd mode for individual movement patterns (e.g. cycling, cross-coun
try skiing etc.). This is preconfigured via a software programme and can be accessed by the
patient by means of buttons located on the front of the hydraulic unit.
The so-called LOM (Lock Orthosis Mode) can also be selected. Stance phase damping is espe
cially strong in this mode, offering a certain level of security for new patients in particular. The
swing phase can be triggered notwithstanding high stance phase damping.
Empty battery mode, in which the orthosis switches to a predefined stance phase damping value,
permits safe walking when the battery is drained.

3 Application

3.1 Medical Purpose

The orthosis is intended solely for orthotic fittings of the lower limbs.

3.2 Indications

Unilateral lower limb paresis or flaccid paralysis, e.g. due to polio, traumatic paresis including
paraplegia.
Physical prerequisites such as muscle status, mobility grade and axis deviations that guarantee
proper control of the orthosis are crucial.
The patient must fulfil the physical and mental requirements for the perception of audible signals.
Indications must be determined by the physician.

3.3 Contraindications

Flexion contracture in the knee joint in excess of 10°
Varus malposition in excess of 0° or valgus malposition in excess of 10°
Ankle arthrodesis: passive range of motion less than 2°

3.4 Conditions of Use

The orthosis was developed for activities of daily life but not for extreme sports such as free climb
ing, skydiving, paragliding etc. The applicable environmental conditions are described in technic
al data.
