IMPORTANT
THIS MANUAL HAS BEEN PREPARED FOR SKILLED OPERATORS AND
MUST BE FULLY READ BEFORE USING THE EQUIPMENT. INEXPERI-
ENCED PERSONS OR THOSE NOT FAMILIAR WITH THE METHODS
AND SAFE OPERATION OF THE EQUIPMENT SHOULD CONSULT ONE
OF OUR EXPERTS. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO INSTALL, OPERATE OR SER-
VICE THIS EQUIPMENT IF NOT QUALIFIED TO DO SO OR IF THIS
MANUAL HAS NOT BEEN READ AND UNDERSTOOD. IF IN DOUBT
REGARDING EQUIPMENT INSTALLATION AND USE, CONSULT THE
MANUFACTURER (TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE DEPARTMENT).

1.0 SAFETY RULES

The use of welding equipment and the execution of welding opera-
tions involve hazards for the operator and others. These safety rules
must be read, understood and respected by the operator. Remember
that a careful operator aware and respectful of his duties is the best
guarantee against any accidents. Carefully read and comply with the
following rules before connecting, preparing, using or transporting
the equipment.
1.1

INSTALLATION OF EQUIPMENT

Compliance with the following rules is therefore important:
1.
Installation and maintenance of the equipment must be carried out in com-
pliance with local safety regulations.
2.
Pay attention to the good condition of socket and connection
plug cables; replace them if necessary. Service the equipment periodically.
Use adequately sized cables.
3.
Connect the earthing lead as near as possible to the work area.
4.
Never use the equipment in the presence of water. Ensure that the sur-
rounding area, including any objects and the equipment in it, is dry.
5.
Be careful to avoid direct contact with live metal parts.
6.
Always wear gloves and insulating (rubber soles) shoes when working in
wet areas or standing on metal surfaces.
1.2

INDIVIDUAL AND THIRD PARTY PROTECTION

As welding is a source of radiation, noise, heat and noxious fumes, the protec-
tion of the operator and third parties must be guaranteed with suitable means
and precautions. Stand clear of the electric arc or white-hot metal if without
protection. Failure to respect these rules when carrying out operations can
result in serious health risks.
1.
Wear protection clothing:
2.
Use a mask with suitable glass filter (at least NR10 ) to pro-
tect eyes. Warn other persons in the vicinity to look away and stand clear of
arc rays and white-hot metal.
3.
Wear ear protectors; welding can be noisy and disturb other
persons in the work area.
4.
1.3

FIRE AND EXPLOSION PREVENTION

and explosion can be prevented by respecting the following rules:
Compressed gas cylinders are dangerous.
White-hot cinders and sparks can cause fire. Fire
SAFETY RULES
1.
Remove or protect any flammable objects and substances, such as wood,
saw dust, clothing, paints, solvents, petrol, kerosene, natural gas, acety-
lene, propane and similar flammable materials, with fireproof material.
2.
Keep suitable extinguishing means, such as fire extinguishers, water and
sand, nearby.
3.
Do not carry out welding or cutting on closed pipes and containers.
4.
Do not carry out welding or cutting on containers or pipes (even open) con-
taining, or which have contained, substances that could give rise to explo-
sions or other dangerous reactions when exposed to humidity or heat.
1.4

DANGER OF INTOXICATION

Fumes and gases generated during welding can be dangerous if
inhaled for prolonged periods. Therefore respect the following rules:
1.
Ensure adequate ventilation (natural or forced) in the work area.
2.
Provide for forced ventilation when working on materials such as: lead,
beryllium, cadmium, zinc, galvanized or painted materials, and also wear a
protective mask.
3.
If the ventilation system is inadequate, use a respirator with air supply.
4.
Pay attention to gas leaks. Shielding gases such as argon are denser than
air and replace it if released in confined spaces.
5.
In case of welding in confined places (e.g. inside boilers, pits, etc.), the
welder should be watched over by a person outside and all the accident-
prevention procedures must be complied with.
6.
Irritation of the eyes, nose and throatare symptoms of intoxication and poor
ventilation, in which case stop work and improve ventilation. Stop welding if
physical symptoms persist.
1.5

GENERATOR POSITIONING

The equipment must be positioned in compliance with the following rules:
1.
The operator must have ready access to the controls and connections of the
equipment.
2.
Do not position the equipment in confined places: generator ventilation is
very important; avoid dusty or dirty locations, where dust or other material
could be sucked by the system.
3.
The equipment (including leads) must not obstruct corridors or the work
activities of others.
4.
The generator must be in a safe place.
1.6

TRANSPORTING THE GENERATOR

The machine is easy to lift and transport. Transporting the equipment is easy
but must be done respecting the following rules:
1.
Disconnect the generator and all its accessories from the power supply
before lifting or handling.
2.
Do not lift, drag or pull the equipment by the cables.

EMISSIONS
2.1

ADVICE ON APPRAISING THE AREA AROUND THE WELDING MACHINE

Before installing the welding machine the user must appraise the surrounding
area for potential electromagnetic problems; in particular, the following must be
taken into account:
a.
other wiring, control cables, telephone and communication cables; above,
below and adjacent to the welding machine;
b.
radio and television transmitters and receivers;
c.
computers and other control equipment;
d.
equipment critical for safety purposes such as safety checks of industrial
equipment;
e.
the health of persons in the vicinity, e.g. persons who wear pacemakers and
hearing aids;
f.
equipment used for calibrations and measurements;
