Operation

Checking the oil level (08)
Check the engine oil level when the engine is
stopped and is standing horizontally.
1. Unscrew the oil dipstick and wipe it clean.
2. Guide the oil dipstick into the oil filler neck
until it bottoms (do not screw tight), then re-
move again.
3. If the oil level is around or below the lower
limit mark on the oil dipstick, top up with oil to
the upper limit mark.
4. Screw the oil dipstick back in.

Filling with petrol

1. Unscrew the tank lid (01/1, 03/1), and store it
in a clean location.
2. Fill with petrol via a funnel.
3. Clean and tightly close the tank filling open-
ing.
Fuel recommendations:
■
Use clean, fresh, lead-free petrol with a mini-
mum octane rating of 90.
■
Buy fuel in quantities which can be used with-
in 30 days (see 'Storage').
■
Petrol with a component of up to 10% ethanol
or up to 15% MTBE (anti-knock protection) is
acceptable.
■
Do not mix petrol with oil.
6 OPERATION
WARNING! Risk of explosion. Petrol and
oil are highly flammable.
■
Never use starter spay or similar.
CAUTION! Risk of injury! Danger of kick-
back: The starter cable can return faster to the
engine than the cable can be released.
■
Anticipate a sudden jolt when the starter ca-
ble has been pulled.
■
Before starting the engine, refer to the equip-
ment operating instructions.
■
Start and operate the engine only in the open
air; operation in closed rooms is forbidden,
even if doors and windows are open.
■
Only start the engine in the horizontal posi-
tion.

Fill the pump

IMPORTANT! Danger of damage to the
pump! Dry running will destroy the pump!
■
The pump must be filled with water up to the
overflow before each use so that it can draw
water immediately.
1. Unscrew the filler plug (02/4, 04/4).
2. Fill with water via the filler plug until the mark
on the pump housing is reached.
3. Screw in the filler plug again.

Switching the pump on

1. Open all shut-off devices (valve, spray noz-
zle, water cock) in the pressure line.
2. Open fuel cock (04/13) (BMP 30000 only).
IMPORTANT! Danger of damage to the
pump! A closed pressure line can result in dam-
age to the pump!

Do not allow the pump to run against a
closed pressure line.
Choke
1. Close the choke lever (01/12, 04/12) during a
cold start.
2. When the machine is running at operating
temperature, move the choke lever to the
half-open position.
NOTE If the machine still does not start af-
ter two attempts, open the choke lever fully.
Starting the engine
■
Keep flammable objects from the exhaust
and the cylinder area.
■
Allow the exhaust, cylinder and cooling vanes
to cool down before contact.
Pull-cord starter
1. Pull the starter cable (01/11, 04/11) out brisk-
ly, and then allow it to wind back in slowly.
NOTE If the machine still does not start af-
ter the second attempt, follow the instructions for
the choke.

Switching the pump off

1. Set the throttle lever (01/15, 04/15) to
"SLOW".
2. Turn the ignition switch (02/10, 03/10) to
"OFF".
3. Close fuel cock (04/13) (BMP 30000 only).
