moved through the sublimation of the ice. This loss of heat
must be balanced by the heat supplied to the shelves.
If too little heat is supplied, the product cools down and the
sublimation speed decreases. The drying time is lengthe-
ned unnecessarily. If, on the other hand, too much heat is
supplied, the temperature rises. The product could begin to
thaw with the resulting bad influence on the quality of the
product.
Setting and monitoring the temperature when using heat-
able and coolable shelves are effected over the regulator of
the thermostats provided.
7.2.2
Determining the End of Primary Drying

At the end of the primary drying phase, the ice in the pro-
duct has sublimated. To be able to determine this more
exactly, the chamber must be isolated from the condenser
coils (19). This is possible in units equipped with a valve
plate (5) (Cat. No. 045 62). If, after isolating the chamber
(2) (10) from the condenser chamber (2), the pressure in
the chamber does not rise noticeably for a period of
'approximately 60 seconds, the primary drying can be con-
sidered as ended. If a marked rise in pressure is noticed du-
ring this time, the valve must be opened again immediate-
ly and the drying process continued.
Note:
The chamber-condenser valve (5) is not a vacuum val-
ve. For this reason, it cannot be used to vent the cham-
ber (2) (10) separately from the condenser housing (2).
7.3
Secondary Drying and Determination of the
End of Secondary Drying
7.3.1
Secondary Drying
The residual moisture content in a product will depend on
the water vapor pressure in its environment and on its tem-
perature. During secondary drying, the water adsorbed at
the inner surfaces is pumped off at the lowest possible
pressure. This makes it possible to attain a very low resi-
dual moisture in the product.

sublimation.
Si Ton fournit trop peu de chaleur, le produit se refroidit,
la vitesse de sublimation se reduit et le temps de sublima-
tion se prolonge. Si Ton apporte trop de calories, la
temperature est en hausse et le produit peut se decongeler
et perdre ses quality's primaires.
Les parametres de temperatures et de surveillance pour la
regulation thermostatique des plateaux de chargement
sont etablis par le regulateur integre au microprocesseur.
7.2.2.
Etablissement du point final de la sublimation
primaire par la mesure de remontee de pression
(DAM) (Fig. 8)
Lorsque Ton est en fin de sublimation primaire, la glace
contenue dans le produit est sublimee. Afin de determiner
ce stade final, il faut isoler la chambre de dessiccation de
la chambre du condenseur (19). Par sa configuration, not-
re appareil permet 1'isolation de la chambre de dessiccati-
on au moyen de la vanne-plateau (5) (cat n° 045 62). Si
pendant un temps de 60 secondes, la vanne etant fermee,
on ne remarque aucune valeur de remontee de pression,
nous pouvons conclure alors que la sublimation primaire
est terminee. Si Ton constate une legere remontee de pres-
sion, on doit immediatement reouvrir la vanne et continu-
er la sublimation.
Remarque:
Cette vanne a plateau n'est pas une vanne a vide, il
n'esi done pas possible de remeltre la chambre de con-
densation a I'atmosphere et de garder la chambre de
dessiccation sous vide.
7.3.
Post-lyophilisation et determination du point
final de lyophilisation
7.3.1.
Description de la phase de post-lyophilisation
L'humidite residuelle d'un produit depend de la tension de
vapeur d'eau de son environnement (milieu) comme de sa
temperature. Pendant la post-lyophilisation et a basse
pression, on pompe l'eau residuelle contenue dans le pro-
duit. Cette humidite residuelle du produit est tres minime.
