COVERING: SAFETY PRECAUTIONS & PLACING INTO SERVICE
AIR / HYDRAULIC OPERATED INDUSTRIAL PISTON PUMPS
It is the responsibility of the employer to place this information into the hands of the operator.
READ, UNDERSTAND, AND FOLLOW THIS INFORMATION TO AVOID INJURY AND PROPERTY DAMAGE.
EXCESSIVE AIR PRESSURE
STATIC SPARK
EXPLOSION HAZARD
The piston pump models listed on page DOC-1 "Declaration of Con-
formity" may be used in some potentially explosive atmospheres
ONLY when the following Special Conditions of Installation and
Operation are followed exactly. Non-compliance with any of these
special conditions could create an ignition source that may ignite
any potentially explosive atmospheres. These models conform to
EU Directives 98/37/EC "Machinery Directive" and 94/9/EC "Equip-
ment and Protective Systems intended for use in Potentially Ex-
plosive Atmospheres". The models on page DOC-1 are marked (Ex)
Group II 2 GD X. Models listed on page DOC-3 "Declaration of Con-
formity" conform only to EU Directive 98/37/EC and should never
be used in a potentially explosive atmosphere.
You must read and follow the detailed explanation of these
hazards and follow the appropriate instructions noted in this
manual for safe installation and operation.
WARNING = Hazards or unsafe practices which could
result in severe personal injury, death or
substantial property damage.
CAUTION = Hazards or unsafe practices which could
result in minor personal injury, product
or property damage.
NOTICE
= Important installation, operation or
maintenance information.
WARNING EXCESSIVE INLET AIR / HYDRAULIC PRESSURE.
Can cause personal injury, death, pump damage or prop-
erty damage.
Do not exceed the maximum inlet air / hydraulic pressure
as stated on the pump model plate.
Be sure material hoses and other components are able to
withstand fl uid pressures developed by this pump. Dam-
aged hose could leak fl ammable liquids and create poten-
tially explosive atmospheres. Check all hoses for damage
or wear. Be certain dispensing device is clean and in prop-
er working condition.
Do not exceed the maximum material pressure of any
component in the system.
A pressure relief valve must be used to prevent overpres-
surization of the system and possible component rup-
ture.
WARNING MAXIMUM SURFACE TEMPERATURE LIMITS.
Maximum surface temperature depends on the operating
conditions of the pump. Do not exceed maximum temper-
ature limits as noted on page PTL-1.
Do not allow the pump to run dry. Pump surface tempera-
tures will rise and temperatures may exceed maximum
temperature limits of packings, as noted on page PTL-1.
High surface temperatures may ignite potentially explo-
sive gases or dust in contact with the pump.
Ensure proper housekeeping to eliminate dust buildup on
the pump. Certain dusts may ignite at pump surface tem-
perature limits, as noted on page PTL-1.
Excessive hydraulic oil temperatures can cause fi re. The
hydraulic motor is rated for operation up to 130˚ F (54˚ C).
Maximum temperatures are based on mechanical stress
only. Certain chemicals will signifi cantly reduce maximum
safe operating temperature. Consult the chemical manu-

WARNING STATIC SPARK. Can cause explosion resulting
in severe injury or death. Ground pump and pumping sys-
tem.
Sparks can ignite fl ammable material and vapors.
The pumping system and object being sprayed must be
grounded when it is pumping, fl ushing, recirculating or
spraying fl ammable materials such as paints, solvents, lac-
quers, etc. or used in a location where surrounding atmo-
sphere is conducive to spontaneous combustion. Ground
the dispensing valve or device, containers, hoses and any
object to which material is being pumped.
Use the pump grounding lug provided on metallic pumps
for connection of a ground wire to a good earth ground
source. Use Aro Part No. 66885-1 Ground Kit or a suitable
ground wire (12 ga. min.).
Secure pump, connections and all contact points to avoid
vibration and generation of contact or static spark.
Consult local building codes and electrical codes for spe-
cifi c grounding requirements.
After grounding, periodically verify continuity of electri-
cal path to ground. Test with an ohmmeter from each com-
ponent (e.g., hoses, pump, clamps, container, spray gun,
etc.) to ground to insure continuity. Ohmmeter should
show 0.1 ohms or less.
Submerse the outlet hose end, dispensing valve or device
in the material being dispensed if possible. (Avoid free
streaming of material being dispensed.)
Use hoses incorporating a static wire or use groundable
piping.
Use proper ventilation.
Keep fl ammables away from heat, open fl ames and
sparks.
Keep containers closed when not in use.
WARNING BARREL PUMPS AND CONTAINERS. Pumping
potentially explosive materials with barrel pumps from
containers can create an explosive atmosphere inside the
container.
Containers must be sealed and an inert gas media must be
pumped into the container to fi ll the void.
Barrel pumps must be removed from the container when
not in use.
Barrel pumps must always be submerged in media being
pumped.
Barrel pumps must never be run dry.
WARNING UPPER PACKING GLAND LEAKS CAN OCCUR.
Potentially explosive materials and vapors can be emit-
ted into the atmosphere. Upper packing glands must be
inspected daily.
Piston pumps with adjustable packing glands - gland
packings must be tightened if leakage is noted. Gland
packings must be replaced if adjustment does not stop
leakage.
Piston pumps with non-adjustable packing glands - gland
packings must be replaced if leakage is noted.
WARNING LEAKING FLUIDS. Can cause explosion haz-
ards.
Re-torque all pipe and hose fi ttings to insure against fl uid
