MODIFICATION OF VEST FRAME
Any shape modification to the vest frame should only be done after heating the plastic as follows:
Heat the plastic with a heat gun on both sides of the frame in the desired region evenly until a surface temperature
between 125–200 °F (approximately 52–93 °C) is reached. The heated region of plastic can then be contoured as
needed by gently positioning the plastic into the desired shape, and holding this position until thoroughly cooled.
Össur recommends vest frame shape modification in the following instance:
Kyphotic Curve: The middle section of the posterior vest can be modified as necessary by heating as described above
and then holding in the desired position while the plastic cools. Reversing the direction of the posterior upright rods
can accommodate for a kyphotic curve (Figure 28). The anterior vest should be set to the shortest position.
AFTERCARE
Note: these instructions are directed towards practitioners/physicians applying a halo, and are not intended as
patient care instructions. Refer to Össur Patient Information Manual for patient home hygiene and care instructions.
1. Provide and explain information to patient for daily care of halo.
2. Schedule a 24–36 hour follow up visit post-application to check pin tightness and for signs of complications
3. 3 week visits for liner changes and pin-site inspections should be scheduled. During pin-site inspections, check
for redness, discharge, or other signs of infection.
PROTOCOL FOR POSTERIOR LINER CHANGES
Per physician's prescription and established protocol only.
1. Remove the threaded knob from the front of the vest securing waist stabilizers.
2. Place patient prone with chest bolstered slightly to raise face from table/bed.
3. Detach one waist strap and one shoulder strap from the strap loops on the anterior vest, (both on the same
side) by loosening. Loosen and detach both posterior upright-vest connectors. Do not remove the uprights
from the transverse rod.
4. Hinge open the posterior vest and remove dirty posterior liner. Replace with a clean liner, matching the hook
and loop sections (Figure 29).
5. Clean skin with hypoallergenic soap and water.
6. Replace and re-attach completely the posterior vest. Hint: It is best to loop the waist strap through the anterior
vest before sliding the waist stabilizer back into place. Also, attaching the hook piece at the end of the strap and
cutting both on an angle make re-applying the strap easier. Ensure to tighten all straps. Re-attach upright rods
to vest and tighten hex bolts on upright-vest connectors.
7. the threaded knob in the front of the vest must be re-inserted to secure the waist stabilizers (Figure 14).

PROTOCOL FOR ANTERIOR LINER CHANGE
Per physician's prescription and established protocol only.
1. Place patient supine facing upwards.
2. Remove threaded knob securing waist stabilizers. Loosen and detach waist straps, waist stabilizers, and
anterior upright-vest connectors. Do not remove the uprights from the transverse rod (Figure 30).
3. Remove dirty anterior liner and replace with clean liner, matching the hook and loop sections.
4. Clean skin with hypoallergenic soap and water.
5. Replace and re-attach completely the anterior vest. Ensure to tighten all straps. the threaded knob in the front
of the vest must be re-inserted to secure the waist stabilizers (Figure 14). Re-attach upright rods to anterior vest
and tighten hex bolts on upright-vest connectors.
