BEFORE YOU SET OFF...
Familiarise yourself with this owner's manual.
Always check the following before setting off:
*
Weather conditions and weather forecast
Consider the prevailing and expected wind, sea conditions and visibility. Are
your boat's design category and size, as well the skills of the master and the
crew, sufficient for the waters you are heading to?
*
Load
Do not overload the boat. Make sure you balance the load correctly.
To maintain stability, heavy objects should be placed as low as possible.
*
Passengers
Make sure a life vest is available for everyone. Assign the tasks and duties of
each member of the crew before setting off.
*
Fuel
Make sure you have enough fuel – also for adverse weather conditions and
unexpected situations.
*
Engine and equipment
Inspect the condition of the steering mechanism, electrical equipment and
battery and carry out the daily routine checks specified in the engine manual.
Check the overall seaworthiness of the boat: make sure the battery is charged,
check for fuel or water leaks and check all safety and rescue equipment.
Remove any excess bilge water.
*
Ventilation
Ensure sufficient ventilation of the fuel compartments to reduce the risk of fire.
Make sure ventilation channels are unobstructed.
*
Stowing of equipment, accessories and luggage
Make sure all equipment, accessories and luggage is stowed and stays
securely in place, even in rough sea conditions and strong wind.
*
Charts
Unless you know your route thoroughly, make sure charts of a sufficiently
extensive area are available.
*
Preparations
Agree with your crew who unmoors which lines. Ensure that no mooring ropes
or other lines are caught in the propeller during departure or mooring.
