When the paddle wheel assembly is completed , fix them in place with the paddle wheel housings. Slide the
brass rod no 134- 3 mm diameter x 235 mm length ) through no 18 inside the hull. Fit and glue the first paddle
wheel in place, put the housing over the top of the wheel, then slide and flue the housing into place. The same
applies to the other side except glue the paddle wheel in place last. Cut out the platforms (no 80 - 2 ) which
fit on top of the paddle wheel housing, plank, mark and drill the holes for the brass stanchions. The platform is
supported by 3x3 mm strip running underneath the edge of the length of the platforms. Refer to plan l and plan
5 for the correct placing of no 67 , 68 and 138. Carefully mark out and fix the 2x1 mm wales along the sides of
the ship.
18. Mark out, cut and shape the bulwark railings (no 85 -86) use plan 4 no 15 and 17 to show how they are shaped
and put into place. make the pin rails 102, 104, 106, and supports. 103 , 105, 107. drill the holes out for the
belaying pins before fixing them to the hull. Make and fix the rudder in place as shown on plan 5, no 31. and
plan 1.
19. Refer to plans 5 and 6 and make the various deck housing, hatches, gratings etc., as shown, The brass funnel
needs to be carefully marked out for the drilling of the holes for the eylets (no. 184). Mark a straight line down
the funnel and using the plans mark out where the holes have to be drilled. Using a 0.50 mm drill bit. It is best
to punch a slight dent in the area that is to be drilled to avoid the drill slipping . Glue or solder the six brass
rings that fit around the funnel, then epoxy or solder part 183, the photo etched funnel top when the glue is dry,
gently pull the tops of the funnel top out slightly with a small pair of pliers.
Make the boiler with the abachi block. Refer to plan 5. no. 42 for the correct shape which is easily obtained
with the use of a sanding block. Next, place half of the base of the funnel on the edge of the boiler and care-
fully mark out the semi-circle. Fret out the area well inside the marked area and file out with semi-circular file,
constantly checking for a correct fit to the funnel. Mark out and drill the areas where no 180 fits, these are pins
at 0.60 dia. and then make the doors on the side from 1x8 mm strip. Glue the funnel to the boiler using epoxy
resin. Once the glue has dried paint the whole unit first with a matt black undercoat and then two coats of satin
black (Humbrol paint no 85.) to give a metallic look.
Because of the deck camber some of the assemblies will not lie flat on the deck, to overcome this place a piece
of abrasive paper on the deck and sand the assemby using a forward and backward motion in the middle of
the deck until the curve is achieved.
20. Once all deck fittings railings, cleats, etc., shown on plan 5 and 6 have been made and varnished glue them
to their respective positions as shown on the plans. Take the boat hooks no 380 out of the housings until the
rigging is complete as they can interfere with the rigging process.
21. Glue the two halves of the figure head together and glue it onto the end of the prow as shown on plan 1. Paint
the figure head gold (Humbrol colour gold) cut out and glue into place on either side at the bow no. 92, use
plan I for the correct fit. Drill out the house holes for the anchor chains and also drill and file out the hole for the
bowsprit at the front of the bulwarks. Using plan 1 and 2 make the bow railings 93 and 94. ( 1 x 2 mm strips).
Fit the four horizontal strips first and then the two vertical strips. Carefully mark out and drill the holes for the
stanchions or the bulwark rail near the stem of the ship and place the rails in the holes using super glue.
22. Refer to plan 1 to identify where the chainplates and port hinges are placed. All of these pieces are on the pho-
to etched brass sheet. Use a craft knife to cut them off their sprue, but do not cut them off until you need to as
they can be easily lost. Place the port hinges and other small brass parts in their respective positions on the hull
and pin them in place using the smallest pins provided in the kit. Pin the chain plates in place using the largest
pins available and then paint them black. Once the hull is complete, ready for the masts and rigging give it a
final varnish and make the stand from the printed plywood sheet. The complete assembly is shown on plan 8.
Make and fit the stem flagstaff as shown on plan 7 no 72. Before you seize and place the blocks that are fixed
around a rail about the mast as shown on plan 6. no. 55, Open the holes using a 0.25 mm drill bitt as it would
be very difficult to do so once the masts and spars are in place.
23. Refer to plan 5 no 52. for the bowsprit assembly. The bowsprit 231 should be cut from 6mm ramin dowel and
cut to 185 mm in length. The jib boom 232 is 4 mm dia ramin dowel to 180 mm in length and tapered as
shown on the plans. Taper the dowel using a razor plane and then smooth off with abrasive paper. Stain using
walnut wood dye. Fix the capping no 234 and the support no 233 and then lash the end of the jib boom to the
main dowel with no 235 which is 1mm black hemp. Make the dolphin striker as shown using ramin dowel 3mm
