Smocking

Smocking is a delicate, decorative treatment on
children's clothing or women's blouses. Choose a
soft, lightweight fabric such as batiste, gingham or
challis. Cut the fabric three times the finished width.
Select 1.
Increase stitch length to 5.0.
Sew rows of straight stitches about 10-13mm (3/8"-
1/2˝) apart, across the area to be smocked. (A
looser needle thread tension will make gathering
easier.)
Tie the threads along one edge. Pull the bobbin
threads to distribute the gathers evenly. Secure the
threads at the other end.
Select 045, 031 or 032.
Attach satin stitch foot F.
Sew smocking stitch between the straight stitches.
(Pressure may need to be reduced.) Pull out the
straight stitching lines.
