PALATE INSTEAD OF "TONGUE THRUSTING"
THE THERAPIST OR PATIENT PLACES THE " HOLE" IN THE PALATE OF
TOOL 2 AGAINST THE PATIENT'S TONGUE TIP TO GET A TACTILE
"FEEL" OF THE CONTACT AGAINST THE HOLE

Tongue Tip Resistance Movement
GOAL: TONGUE TIP ELEVATION STRENGTHENING
- AN ISOTONIC EXERCISE
BASELINE EXERCISE
•
PLACE TOOL 2 ON THE PALATE, BEHIND THE FRONT TEETH
•
PRESS THE TIP OF THE TONGUE INTO THE "HOLE" OPENING AS
LONG AS POSSIBLE.
•
RECORD NUMBER OF SECONDS THE PRESSURE CAN BE
MAINTAINED
•
REPEAT THE NUMBER OF REPETITIONS UNTIL PATIENT
EXPERIENCES FATIGUE
SUGGESTED TRAINING EXERCISE
A:

PLACE TOOL 2 ON THE PALATE, BEHIND THE FRONT TEETH
•
PRESS THE TIP OF THE TONGUE INTO THE "HOLE" OPENING
•
CONTINUE TO PRESS INTO THE OPENING FOR 3 SECONDS AND
THEN RELAX
•
REPEAT 5 TIMES

PLACE TOOL 2 ON THE PALATE, BEHIND THE FRONT TEETH

LOWER TOOL 2 FROM PALATE
•
PRESS THE TIP OF THE TONGUE INTO THE "HOLE" OPENING

ATTEMPT TO KEEP THE DEVICE IN THE MOUTH WHILE GENTLY
PULLING THE HANDLE OUT OF THE MOUTH

PLACE TOOL 2 ON THE PALATE, BEHIND THE FRONT TEETH
•
OPEN MOUTH AND POSITION THE TONGUE TIP INTO THE "HOLE"
OPENING
•
LOWER THE TONGUE TIP AWAY FROM THE "HOLE" OPENING AND
REPEAT THE POSITIONING THE TONGUE TIP INTO THE "HOLE" AS
MANY TIMES AS POSSIBLE AND RECORD THE NUMBER OF
REPETITIONS OF "IN" AND "OUT" OF "HOLE" UNTIL FATIGUE

Swallowing
GOAL: ACCURACY OF SWALLOWING
SUGGESTED TRAINING EXERCISE
• TAKE A SIP OF WATER
• PLACE TOOL 2 ON THE PALATE, BEHIND THE FRONT TEETH
• PRESS THE LIPS ON THE "FOOTBALL SHAPE" ON THE HANDLE
• BITE THE TEETH ON THE HANDLE
• PRESS THE TONGUE TIP INTO THE "HOLE OPENING"
• SWALLOW ONLY WITH SALIVA WITH NO FOOD IN MOUTH
IT IS SUGGESTED THAT TOOL 2 AND TOOL 3 BE USED IN TANDEM.
THE GOAL IS TO RETRAIN "TONGUE THRUSTING" RESULTING FROM
DEVELOPMENTAL OR ACQUIRED NEUROLOGICAL DISORDERS. THE
PROCEDURE RETRAINS THE TONGUE TIP TO A FRONT PALATAL
POSITION AT THE BEGINNING OF THE ORAL PHASE OF SWALLOWING
INSTEAD OF THRUSTING BETWEEN THE LIPS.
