ORA-LIGHT
®
Exercise Protocol
The Ora-Light Oral Motor Exercise System is an
exciting new therapy tool to aid the therapist to target
and maximize the rehabilitation outcomes of patients
with oral motor deficits.
Tongue
Orbicularis Oris muscle
Genioglossus muscle
Mentalis
Geniohyoid muscle
Patients who experience this therapy become highly
motivated to succeed in rehabilitation as a result of a
positive feedback that is provided by improvement in
functional competence.
The goal of the Ora-Light Oral Motor Exercise System
is to strengthen the musculature of the tongue, lips and
cheeks and facilitate neuromuscular coordination and
competency for speech and swallowing. The exercise
tools have activating shapes and textures on the
handle and palatal portions to provide increased
sensory feedback. This sensory feedback contributes
to the initiation and timing of patterned oral motor
activity.
The educational exercise protocol enables the patient
to carry out consistent and repetitive exercises to
strengthen the muscles of the lips, cheeks, front and
back of the tongue and to facilitate neuromuscular
competence.
The Ora-Light system can be utilized at the
therapist's clinical treatment sessions, and in the
patients' home. The goal is to provide as much
repetition of the corrected pattern as possible and to
achieve automatic execution of the skilled task.
The exercise protocol for each of the four exercise
tools will utilize a baseline exercise, when appropriate,
as well as a suggested training exercise protocol.
The data from the baseline exercise protocol
enables the therapist to design an individualized
protocol tailored to the patient's needs.
It establishes a level of function of muscle strength
and endurance at the start of training. It also
measures progress and enables the clinician to
design an appropriate exercise for each level of
therapy using repetition of the baseline testing for
measurement of improvement.
The suggested training exercise protocol of the
timing and repetitions of each exercise has been
developed based on clinical expertise of speech-
language pathology programs that treat patients with
oral motor deficits.
Please note that with any exercise program there
may be initial fatigue of the lips and tongue muscles
at the beginning of the exercises. This is a positive
sign that the musculature is being strengthened. As
the exercises continued, patients gained strength and
endurance and fatigue was eliminated.
